ESTERO, Fla.- In Air Force's final appearance at the Gulf Coast Showcase, the Falcons struggled to find their footing on both ends of the floor in a 77-58 loss to Saint Louis.
"I believe that those first two games took it out of us," said head coach Chris Gobrecht in reference to the Falcons recent matchups with Power Five opponents Michigan and Georgia Tech. "Nobody had to battle the first two teams we had to battle."
Kamri Heath led Air Force with 15 points, doing well to force contact near the rim. The senior ended her afternoon 8-10 from the free throw line. Jo Huntimer managed 10 points as well as a team-high four assists. Emily Adams contributed career-highs in points (7) as well as rebounds (7).
The Falcons found it difficult to finish possessions, as Air Force connected on just 20 of its 65 attempts from the field (31%). The Falcons also saw a majority of their attempts at the free throw line go for naught, making 13 of 27 tries.
Even on defense Air Force seemed out of sorts. Saint Louis scored 50 of its 77 points in the paint while the Billikens connected on 50% of their shot attempts (31-62).
Reminiscent of the previous two days, a slow start again plagued the Falcons. After both teams made their first shots of the afternoon, the Billikens reeled off 12 unanswered points to grab an initial 14-2 lead. Air Force made just two of its 15 shots in the 1st quarter, leading to an 18-5 deficit after the first 10 minutes.
A more efficient 2nd quarter was offset by a Saint Louis' consistent scoring, as Air Force trailed 38-23 going into the halftime break.
The game escaped the Falcons in the 3rd quarter, where Air Force found the bottom of the net on just three of its 18 shots. The Falcons were also 4-10 from the free throw line in the period.
"I do think this whole experience was really good for us," said Gobrecht. "It's exposed a lot of things we needed to learn about ourselves. It's worth it for that reason."
The Falcons will have ample for time for rest and recovery, next hitting the court on Sunday, December 4 when Air Force hosts UTEP. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm MT.
