DENVER – Senior Sydney Fitch and sophomore Alexis Odom of the Air Force women's tennis team carried their winning ways with them to the Mile High City on Friday, earning the pair's tenth doubles win of the fall in day one of the Colorado Cup on the Denver University campus.
In match-play-style competition, Fitch/Odom downed CSU's Ky Ecton/Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya, 6-3. The veteran CSU pair went 3-1 in duals in the spring of 2022 and combined for a 13-3 dual doubles record with various CSU partners.
This fall, Fitch/Odom have amassed a 10-2 record, which includes a doubles draw victory at the Bedford Cup, along with a doubles final bid at the Wildcat Invitational. The pair won six-consecutive contests to open the year - a streak which extended past the pair's Bedford Cup victory and ended at the ITA Regionals in Vegas.
"Sydney and Alexis have played the most matches together this season and you can see their growth and maturity with each match this fall," said head coach Kim Gidley.
Coach Gidley on Team's Individual Progression After Day One:
"Today, the team did an excellent job of just executing the basics. Although it's a simple process, it makes all the difference when it comes to being successful. Le and Swift played together for the first time this season, so it was a good opportunity to see other combinations just like we wanted; Courtney Swift fought back after losing the first set before falling in the third – She is getting better in every match she is playing and is very close to a big breakthrough. In the end, I think her competitiveness is going to pay off."
Air Force women's tennis resumes play at the Denver Tennis Park on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., taking on Colorado.
