The man of the night was junior keeper Jakob Stone who was impeccable in goal, making impressive saves at key moments in the match to stave off a fiery GCU offense. Stone made seven saves on the night, a career-best in his first career start and first career shutout.
Stone was supported by a staunch AF defense in London Aghedo, Kobey Stoup, Wills Burns, Tyler Johnson, Nick Bourgeois and Jake Chaffetz who all played a significant role in the shutout— testament to the season-long team effort that led the Falcons to their top finish in conference.
Offensively, Thaddaeus Dewing led the squad with three shots, but it was Kobey Stoup and Nick Bisagno who made the strikes and finished with three points apiece.
In the 48th minute, Bisagno touched the ball to Stoup who struck with a fantastic shot from outside the 18-yard box, sailing the ball to the top left corner over the keeper who was just narrowly out of position. Stoup has two goals on the season.
In the 69th minute, the Falcons added an insurance goal via counterattack as Jake Chaffetz acquired the ball from a Lope and pushed it to Dewing who corralled the ball in full stride and placed it perfectly in sophomore midfielder Nick Bisagno's path of attack where he finished the strike mid-air. The goal is the first of Bisagno's collegiate career. Dewing was tabbed with his fourth assist of the season and Chaffetz was credited with his third.
GCU took 17 shots on the match to no avail. Midfielder Bright Nutornutsi led the game with five shots, three on target.
Next up, the Falcons return to the pitch in WAC Tournament semifinals on November 11 in Riverside, California. The Falcons will take on the winner of match two between No. 4 Utah Valley and No. 5 California Baptist in the first round. The semifinals match is slated to being at 4 p.m. on Friday.
