STILLWATER, Okla.- On Tuesday, despite trailing by four heading into the locker room at halftime and holding Big XII opponent Oklahoma State to its lowest first-half score of the 2022-23 season, the Air Force women's basketball team ultimately fell to a second half surge, 62-44, at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
Senior Kamri Heath, playing just 40 miles from her hometown of Edmond, Okla. and in front of a sizeable contingent of family and friends, spearheaded the Falcons' (5-7, 0-0 MWC) scoring efforts, posting 21 points (10-16 FG) to lead all players in scoring. Heath contributed seven boards to the Air Force tally in a team rebounding effort which nearly equaled that of Oklahoma States', with the Falcons totaling 38 to OSU's 39.
Heath's 21 points marks her third 20-plus-point game and fourth-straight double-digit tally of the Falcons' season. Heath has led the Falcons' scoring in six of their first twelve games.
After a Madison Smith find at the rim opened Air Force scoring, Heath landed her first two attempts within 40 seconds of one another- both mid-range jumpers near the top of the key. Heath's momentum carried the Falcons through the remainder of the opening frame, as a second pair of successive baskets brought Air Force back within five, followed up by a Taylor Britt interior play to bring the game back to a one-score affair.
A three-minute stretch without an Air Force basket to end the first quarter crept its way into the second, as the Falcons were forced to endure a 10-0 run by the opposition, pushing OSU's lead out to 13 before Kayla Pilson and Smith were able to find the basket from underneath. From the 7:24 mark through the remainder of the second quarter, the Falcons' eight rebounds held OSU without a basket, allowing Air Force a 5-0 run to cap the half, trailing 25-21.
Returning to the floor for the third, a quick pair of OSU layups on the fast break threatened yet another run by the Cowgirls, before Air Force was able to settle back in. At 8:13, Pilson managed to respond off a Jo Huntimer steal from inside the key with a two-point basket off the high-right wing, drawing the shooting foul on the way down and making the extra point. From there, the Falcons had the offensive momentum needed to keep pace, with OSU just edging Air Force in points 19-16 through the rest of the quarter.
To open the fourth quarter, Smith, on-the-ball, hitched it out to Heath for a three-pointer along the left wing, but it was all OSU, as the Cowgirls made four of their next five attempts to extend the lead and all but seal the final result.
Air Force returns to Clune Arena Dec. 29 to host Utah State in its Mountain West debut.
