ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- Unable to slow down the highest-scoring offense in the Mountain West, Air Force couldn't keep up with New Mexico in Wednesday's 72-57 loss at The Pit.
Riley Snyder led the Falcons with 18 points on 8-18 shooting. Including tonight, Snyder is averaging 17.3 PPG over her last seven games. Kamri Heath scored a season-high 16 points, the result of her 6-16 night from the field. Heath's 16 attempts were also a season-high.
Haley Jones managed a double-double for the third time this season, scoring 10 points to go with 15 rebounds. Wednesday becomes the ninth occasion Jones has snagged at least 10 rebounds in a game. Jo Huntimer led all players with six assists to tie her career-best total.
The Lobos entered tonight averaging 76.3 PPG to lead the conference, and the home team did not disappoint in its shot-making abilities. New Mexico ended the evening shooting nearly 53%, while the Falcons couldn't counter on their own offensive side of the floor. Air Force only connected on 33% of its attempts (24-72) and after starting 4-8 from three-point range, the Falcons ended the game 1-9 from beyond the arc.
Per their namesake, the Lobos liked to get out and run, an area of the game where the Falcons struggled to contain New Mexico. The Lobos outscored the Falcons 23-5 in fast-break opportunities as well as hitting 50% of their three-point tries.
After trailing 33-27 at halftime, the Falcons came out of the locker room with vigor. A 9-2 run to open the third quarter saw the Falcons regain a 36-35 lead, though the Lobos eventually caught fire, closing the quarter on a 13-4 run of their own.
Air Force trimmed the deficit to as much as six multiple times over the final 10 minutes though New Mexico shot 63% in the fourth quarter to keep the Falcons at bay.
Next, Air Force returns home to play Boise State for the first time this season on Tuesday, February 15. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 pm MT.
