Brian Hubbard Opens Action at San Diego State

Backed by career-best marks in four events, Hubbard leads the decathlon after the opening day.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Air Force sophomore Brian Hubbard had a strong start to the decathlon competition this afternoon (March 24), as he represented the track and field team during the opening day of action at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego. Backed by career-best marks in four of the five events, Hubbard currently leads the field with 3408 points.
Hubbard captured the meet's top finishes in three events on Thursday, including the 100-meter dash (career-best 11.13, 832 points), shot put (career-best 38'3½" – a PR by more than four feet, 586 points) and 400-meter dash (career-best 51.28 – a four-second personal improvement, 757 points). He tallied a 627-point leap of 5'10¾" to add five inches to his personal-best clearance in the high jump, while counting 606 points to his opening day score after registering a long jump distance of 19'11¾".
His 3408 points are a personal Day 1 improvement of more than 300 points.
The sophomore returns to San Diego State's Sports Deck tomorrow (March 25) morning for the final five events of the decathlon, while individual events of the 43rd Aztec Invitational get underway for Air Force at 5:30 p.m. (PT), when the men's hammer throwers step into the circle at UC San Diego.
