Falcons Finish Fourth at MPSF Championships

STANFORD, Calif. – Highlighted by a top-five finish on the high bar from sophomore Oliver Zavel, the 10th-ranked Air Force men's gymnastics team earned a fourth-place finish in the team standings at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships this evening (April 2) at Burnham Pavilion.
Top-ranked – and championship host – Stanford claimed scored a 424.250 to win its first conference title since 2011, while third-ranked Oklahoma (second, 417.300), ninth-ranked California (third, 392.400) and the 10th-ranked Falcons (388.050) rounded out the conference standings.
Zavel scored a career-best 13.600 to finish fifth out of 20 gymnasts on the high bar. The sophomore was one of three Falcons to earn top-10 event finishes on Saturday, as Air Force placed also gymnasts within the top half of the field on the floor exercise and still rings. Classmates Jake Sampier and Garrett Braunton finished eighth (career-best 14.050) and 10th (14.000), respectively, on the floor, while Braunton added an eighth-place score of 13.650 on the still rings.
Braunton, who scored a 79.800 in the all-around (sixth), was also the Falcons' top finisher on the pommel horse (11th, 13.050), while freshman Erich Upton and senior Collin Hickey rounded out the Falcons' list of event leaders on the parallel bars (10th, 13.500) and vault (15th, 14.000), respectively.
The 2022 season comes to a close at the NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships in Norman, Okla., on April 15-16. A complete list of national qualifiers will be announced next week.
