COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.- The Falcons red-hot lineup didn't slow down on Saturday, churning out 21 hits and 17 runs to lock down the 17-10 win.
Gabriel Garcia finished a perfect 5-5 on the day with 5 RBI, an afternoon highlighted by a 2nd inning grand slam. Chase Spencer entered the ballgame in the 6th and produced 5 RBI in just two plate appearances. Spencer lifted a two-run double off of the right field wall in the 7th before clearing the bases with a three-run double down the left field line an inning later.
Over the last two games, Spencer is 5-7 with two doubles, two home runs, a triple and 11 RBI.
Blake Covin launched his 2nd home run of the season in the the 1st, a two-run shot to give the Falcons an initial 2-0 lead. Covin ended the day 3-4 with four runs and two walks. Sam Kulasingam extended his on-base streak to 30-consecutive games and his hitting streak to 18-games after a 3-6 line.
Bradyon Altorfer and Trayden Tamiya launched back-to-back home-runs in the 3rd, the 7th long ball for Altorfer in 2022 and the 4th for Tamiya. Altorfer also drove in a run in the 4th with an RBI infield single as part of a 3-5 afternoon.
Doyle Gehring made his first start of the season, and pitched admirably. The sophomore held the nation's top-hitting team to just three earned runs and six hits over 4.2 innings. Zach Argo closed the game for Air Force, entering in the 7th and not allowing a run over his 2.2 innings.
Four Falcon home runs played a large role in Air Force building a 9-1 lead after four innings, though the middle innings saw a shift in momentum. A four-run UNLV 5th preceded a five-run 7th for the Rebels, with score suddenly 11-10 heading into the bottom of the 7th.
Nevertheless, after singles from Covin and Garcia, Spencer laced the first of his two doubles to score both runners, rebuilding a 13-10 lead. Spencer eventually scored after reaching 3rd and crossing the plate following a wild pitch.
Following a 1-2-3 8th from Argo, Spencer again came through. With the bases loaded, the freshman lined a double into the left field corner to clear the bases and give the Falcons a 17-10 lead.
Argo scattered a hit and a walk to seal the win in the final inning.
Air Force will go for the sweep on Sunday, May 1, with first-pitch scheduled for 12:00 pm MT.
