Murphy broke long-standing decathlon marks in the 400-meter dash and 110-meter hurdles.
TUCSON, Ariz. – Senior Wyatt Murphy placed his name on a pair of Air Force Decathlon Event Records this afternoon (April 8), as two members of the Falcons' track and field team wrapped up competition at the Jim Click Decathlon in Tucson.
At the completion of the two-day event, Murphy officially added his name to the Academy's decathlon event standards in the 400-meter dash and 110-meter hurdles. Murphy, who clocked a 400-meter time of 48.24 in the final event of Thursday's competition to crush Noah Palicia's 2011 sub-event standard by 0.46 seconds, opened today's action by racing to a career-best 14.80 in the 110-meter hurdles and deleting 0.14 seconds from a sub-event mark that had stood since 1996 (Marcus Nichols).
Murphy finished the decathlon with 6990 points – the second-highest total of his career – to place eighth in the 18-athlete competition. In addition to his 874-point time in the hurdles, Murphy went a perfect nine-for-nine on first attempt clearances in the pole vault and finished the event with a season-opening, 673-point clearance of 13'9¼". He added a 593-point time of 4:54.29 during his season-debut in the 1500-meter run and rounded out his event scoring with a season-best 141'1" in the javelin throw (486 points) and a 494-point throw of 103'5" in the discus.
Sophomore Braeden Holcombe also competed in the decathlon on Friday, placing 12th with 6332 points. Holcombe, who opened the day with an 873-point time of 14.81 in the 110-meter hurdles – a mark that also bettered the program's previous event record, accounted for top-five point performances in the 1500-meter run (4:41.26, 672 points) and discus throw (career-best 129'1", 651). Suffering a no-height in the pole vault, Holcombe rounded out his point total with a 538-point mark of 152'8" in the javelin.
The rest of the Falcons' travel squad descend on Drachman Stadium tomorrow (April 9) for the main day of competition at the Jim Click Shootout, which begins for Air Force 3:00 p.m. (MST).
