COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.- Following Air Force's crowning as champions of the Mountain West, five Falcons were named to the All-Tournament Team as the result of their superlative individual performances, those being Braydon Altorfer, Doyle Gehring, Sam Kulasingam, Dylan Rogers, and Paul Skenes.
Altorfer concluded his weekend 3-11 with 5 RBI at the plate, including a two-run home run in Air Force's opening round game against top-seed UNLV. In Thursday's tournament-opener, Altorfer also managed an RBI single as well as an RBI groundout, driving in four of the Falcons five runs in the 5-2 win. Lieutenant Altorfer also drove in the first of Air Force's eight runs on Saturday with a sacrifice fly.
Gehring was superb in Friday's 7-3 triumph over San Jose State, tying his career-high with 7.1 innings pitched while striking out 13 of the 28 batters he faced. Gehring didn't allow a run over his 22 outs, as his 13 strikeouts is the most by a Falcons pitcher since Cam White, who punched out 14 Jackrabbits against South Dakota State in 2014. Gehring became one of only nine pitchers in program history to record at least 13 strikeouts in a single game.
Kulasingam, the Tony Gwynn Mountain West Player of the Year, finished 5-11 with two extra-base hits and 3 RBI in three games, recording at least one hit in all three games. Kulasingam extended his hit-streak to 12-consecutive games in the process. His RBI single in the 6th of Saturday's Championship Game tied the score at 3-3 in the 6th before he provided two more insurance runs in the 7th with a two-run double.
Rogers was the winning pitcher in Saturday's title-clincher, totaling 7.1 innings while allowing just three runs with a career-best eight strikeouts. The freshman did not walk any of the 30 batters he faced, paving the road to the Falcons first-ever Mountain West title.
Skenes proved why he's one of the nation's best all-around players this weekend, as the sophomore was also named the Tournament Most Valuable Player in addition to his selection to the All-Tournament Team. Skenes was the winning pitcher for Air Force in Thursday's win against UNLV, pitching 7.0 scoreless innings while allowing just two hits. Skenes punched out 10 Rebels to tie his career-high.
In the latter two games of the weekend, Skenes was 1-6 at the plate with two runs scored, though he reached base four times in 10 total plate appearances. Skenes forced two walks on Friday and reached base twice in two games via a hit-by-pitch as well.
