With the victory, Lentz qualified to the World U20 Championships in August.
EUGENE, Ore. -- Bettering the field by nearly four seconds, Air Force freshman Bryce Lentz captured the gold medal in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the USATF Under-20 Outdoor Championships this evening (June 25) at Hayward Field. With the victory, Lentz will compete at the IAAF U20 World Championships in Cali, Colombia, in August.

Lentz finished the 3000-meter steeplechase course in a time of 8:58.46 – bettering the rest of the 14-runner field by 3.61 seconds. The freshman, part of the top three for the entirety of the race, took over the lead in the fifth lap and never relinquished his position, closing in a 1:07.54 for the victory.

He is the program's first U20/Junior national champion since Sara Neubauer won the shot put in 2007. Lentz is also the Falcons' first Team USA competitor at the World U20 Championships since Hunter Boyer competed in the steeplechase at the 2018 championships in Finland.

Classmate Jalan Rivers also competed at the USATF U20 Championships in Eugene this weekend, clearing 6'10¼" to tie for second in the high jump on Friday, June 24. Rivers capped his freshman campaign with the second-best outdoor clearance of his career, as he bettered the 6'10¼" bar on his third attempt.
