Garrett Braunton in 13th After Opening Day of U.S. Championships

The junior posted a career-high 14.272 to finish third on the high bar during Thursday's action.
TAMPA, Fla. – Air Force junior Garrett Braunton is in 13th after the opening round of all-around competition at the OOFOS U.S. Men's Gymnastics Championships, which kicked off this evening (Aug. 18) in Tampa.
Braunton, who will take an all-around total of 81.222 into Saturday's final, registered the third-highest score of the night on the high bar, as he garnered a career-best 14.272 to finish third in the 38-gymnast field. He added an 11th-place score of 13.100 on the pommel horse, while placing within the top 20 on the still rings (13.350, 15th), parallel bars (13.400, 18th) and vault (13.900, 19th). A 22nd-place score of 13.200 on the floor exercise rounded out the scoring for the Falcons' junior, who combined for the second-highest all-around score of his career.
Sophomore Patrick Hoopes also represented the Academy during Thursday's action, scoring a 12.943 to finish 13th out of 40 gymnasts on the pommel horse.
The pair returns to Amalie Arena on Saturday (Aug. 20) for the final night of men's competition at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships. Action is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m. (ET) and will be broadcast on CNBC.
