Air Force will host Cal State Northridge, Drake and Texas A&M Commerce on Aug 26-27.
The Air Force volleyball team kicks off the 2022 campaign this weekend (Aug 26-27) with the return of the Amy Svoboda Memorial Classic. The Falcons will welcome Cal State Northridge, Drake and Texas A&M Commerce to the Academy's Cadet East Gym for the start of their 47th season of competition.
MEET INFORMATION
The Amy Svoboda Memorial Classic, which features Air Force, Cal State Northridge, Drake and Texas A&M Commerce, will kick off the 2022 season at the Academy's Cadet East Gym over the Aug. 26-27 weekend. There will be live video and stats for all six matches, while Jason Carter, Ryan Kaufman (Friday) and Matt McShane (Saturday) will be on the call for the three Air Force matches.

REMEMBERING AMY SVOBODA
This weekend's tournament is named after Amy Svoboda, a 1989 Academy graduate and four-year letterwinner on the Air Force volleyball team, who was killed during an A-10 training accident in 1997. Svoboda, who earned MVP honors during her senior season with the Falcons, was one of the first 14 female fighter pilots in the Air Force – and one of the first six to fly the A-10.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
This is the opening weekend for all teams. Texas A&M Commerce, competing in its first season at the NCAA Division I level, was 14-10 in Division II last year, with a 12-5 slate in the Lone Star Conference. Cal State Northridge went 7-23 last year, with a 6-14 ledger in Big West action, while Drake was 11-15 overall and 6-12 in Missouri Valley play.
BY THE NUMBERS
Air Force is 1-3 all-time against Cal State Northridge but have only faced the Matadors once at the Division I level – a 0-3 road loss in 2011. The two programs last – and only – meeting at Academy came 1983, when the Falcons kicked off the series with a five-set victory. Air Force has never faced Texas A&M Commerce or Drake.

The Falcons hold a 24-22 all-time record in the first match of a new season – a tally that includes an 11-15 mark at the Division I level. In addition, the Falcons are 14-12 in home openers since joining DI.

The Falcons added five talented newcomers – Ashley Bible, Greta Hans, Alex Hatchett, Savanah Johnson, Jordan Suan – to their lineup for the 2022 season.

BrookeLyn Messenger and Caroline Reinkensmeyer will serve as the team captains for the 2022 season.
ON THE SIDELINES
Keith Barnett returns to the sideline for his fourth season as head coach of the Air Force volleyball team. Barnett, who is in his eighth year overall with the program, will be joined on the bench by seventh-year assistant Elysse Richardson, first-year assistant Brandon Oswald, and fifth-year volunteer Kim Haas.
