COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After helping Air Force Volleyball a perfect 3-0 start to the season, junior Joi Harvey was named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week this morning (Aug. 29), as the conference office announced the first weekly awards of the 2022 campaign.
Harvey captured the first weekly honor of her career – and the program's first Defensive award in five years – after a stellar weekend of action at the Amy Svoboda Memorial Classic. In addition to the victories over Texas A&M Commerce, CSUN and Drake, she also helped the program to its first 3-0 start since 1999.
The junior totaled 26 blocks – 11 more than anyone else in the league – during the opening weekend, as she registered four solo stops and assisted on 22 others. Harvey posted double-digit blocks in two matches, tallying 11 stops (four solo, seven assisted) in the win over CSUN and 10 (all assisted) in the victory over Drake, while setting career-best marks in all three blocking categories.
In addition to her presence on defense, Harvey also had three strong outings on offense, recording 37 kills on .433 hitting over the three-match weekend (37k-8e-67a). She recorded double-doubles during both matches on Saturday, adding a career-high 15 kills to her 11 blocks against the Matadors and 11 strikes to her 10-block tally against the Bulldogs. In addition to her team-leading tally (15) in the win over CSUN, Harvey also led the team in kills (11) during the season-opening sweep of Texas A&M Commerce.
Harvey and the Falcons travel to the East Coast this weekend (Sept. 2-3) for three matches in Rhode Island.
