SPRINGFIELD, MO. – Air Force played the 25th-ranked Missouri State Bears to a draw at nil, Friday evening, at Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium in Springfield. The Falcons are 0-2-1 after three meetings with top-25 teams in the early season.
Falcon keeper John Byszewski had a career night with nine saves against an aggressive Missouri State offense. The draw marked Byszewki's first collegiate shutout and the Bears' first scoreless match of the 2022 campaign.
Air Force fired off 11 shots on the match, led by senior defender Jake Chaffetz's three attempts—testament to the Falcons' counter-attack ability. Jake Angeletti led the offensive charge with three shots in 78 minutes played. Nick Bourgeois and AF goals leader Thaddaeus Dewing put up a pair of shots in the effort.
Falcon team captain and WAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year London Aghedo battled through nagging injury to anchor the shutout defense, holding the Bears' key scorer to no goals despite the numerous attempts.
Dewing played his third consecutive 90-minute match is as many opportunities this season. Chaffetz, Wills Burns, Aghedo and sophomore standout defender Kobey Stoup, clocked 90 minutes of action.
Missouri State's Jesus Barea attempted a game-high eight shots, one on frame, to no avail.
"Full credit to Air Force," Missouri State head coach Michael Seabolt said. "They came and played very hard and it's a group of guys that will represent our country very well in the future."
"We wanted to walk away from this match with three points; however, leaving with one is not a poor result," head coach Doug Hill said. "We defended well from our back line to our keeper who looked like a championship goalie tonight. Overall, it was a great defensive effort, and we displayed our counter-attack ability. We're going to take this result in positive light and push for a road win at Central Arkansas on Monday."
Air Force meets with another Bear in a Monday morning match with Central Arkansas on September 5. Action is slated for noon CT at Bill Stephens Soccer Complex. The first and last time the teams met was at the Air Force Academy in the opening round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament. The Falcons blanked UCA, 4-0.
