LAS VEGAS – Air Force opened the Western Athletic Conference slate on a high note, defeating UNLV 2-1 in a Saturday afternoon meeting at Peter Johann Memorial Field. The Falcons improve to 2-4-2 in their second-straight win while the Rebels drop to 1-4-4.
For the first time this season, Air Force put up two goals on an opponent—both of which struck in the first half. Falcon defenders had another stellar showing as linchpin defenders accounted for both scores. The first strike of the match came from senior defender Jake Chaffetz in the 22nd minute, marking his second goal this season.
In the 44th minute a UNLV foul I the box yielded an AF penalty kick taken by team captain London Aghedo who successfully converted. At the half, Air Force led two-nil and was outshooting UNLV, 9-4.
The Rebels had their chance at a PK in the second half where Nico Clasen made good on the attempt. With the equalizer in reach, the Rebels pushed the pace of their offense but were fended off by a stout AF defense in Aghedo, Chaffetz and Tyler Johnson who each clocked 90 minutes on the pitch.
At the final horn the Falcons put up 14 shots with seven coming on frame. Chaffetz took a match-high three shots while Elijah Bussey, Remi Smith and Nick Bourgeois put up a pair of shots apiece.
In goal, senior keeper John Byszewski notched his second win, making three saves against 11 Rebel shots. His counterpart Andrew Sway made five saves on the match to keep the Falcons from running away with it.
Next up, the Falcons bus to St. George, Utah, to take on Utah Tech on Sunday (Oct. 1). Action is slated for 1:30 p.m. MT at Greater Zion Stadium.
