1/19/2023 7:25:00 PM | Track and Field
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – The Air Force track and field team kicked off the newly-named Ralph Lindeman Invitational this afternoon (Jan. 19) with the heptathlon – the seven-discipline event that the meet's namesake coached for more than three decades at the Academy. Sitting in the top four after the first day, freshman Connor Munson and junior Brian Hubbard currently lead a quartet of Falcons in the meet.
Munson accumulated 2817 points during the opening day of his first collegiate heptathlon to sit third in the 12-athlete competition, while Hubbard is just 11 points back (2806) in fourth. Fellow junior Braeden Holcombe is in seventh after four events with 2615 points and senior Justin Harmon rounds out the quartet in eighth with 2598 points.
Placing within the top half of the field in all four events, Munson tallied career-best marks in the 60-meter dash (7.31, 775 points) and high jump (6'3½", 731 pts), while making his collegiate debut in the long jump (21'6¾", 713 pts) and shot put (38'11", 598 pts). Hubbard, competing in these four events for the first time this season, tallied a career-best mark in the long jump (22'4½", 771 pts), matched his personal-best in the high jump (5'9¾", 602 pts), finished just a quarter-inch off his best in the shot put (37'10½", 579 pts) and added a 7.08 in the 60-meter dash for 854 points.
Holcombe, who missed his 2023 opener with illness, posted a season-best of 6'3½" in the high jump (731 pts), while competing in the long jump (20'5", 635 pts), shot put (36'11½", 562 pts) and 60-meter dash (7.58, 687 pts) for the first time this year. Like his teammates, Harmon also competed in a majority of the events for the first time this season – while also competing in his first multi-event competition since his freshman year. The senior posted career-best marks in the shot put (38'4¼", 588 pts) and high jump (5'7¼", 552 pts), while adding a 7.32 in the 60-meter dash (772 pts) and a distance of 21'2" in the long jump (686 pts).
The quartet returns to the Cadet Field House tomorrow (Jan. 20) at 10:00 a.m. (MT) for the final three heptathlon events – 60-meter hurdles, pole vault, 1000-meter run. The individual events of the Ralph Lindeman Invitational also get underway on Friday, with the rest of the Falcons' lineup beginning action at 12:30 p.m. (MT)
