The Falcons hit the road for a pair of WAC road matches with Utah Valley and Utah Tech. The Falcons take on the Wolverines in Orem, Thursday (Oct. 12), and the Trailblazers in St. George on Sunday (Oct. 15). Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. MT and 1:30 p.m. MT, respectively.
THE SERIES
Air Force will be taking on Utah Valley for the 10th time in program history in what has become one of the Falcons' most frustrating series. The Wolverines are 6-1-2 against Air Force and have a 3-1-1 record against the Falcons when playing at USAFA. Last season, Air Force beat UVU for the first time ever, 3-1, behind Thaddaeus Dewing's first career hat trick of two goals and a penalty kick.
The Falcons and Trailblazers will be meeting for the fourth time in program history with Air Force holding all three victories in the series. Utah Tech has yet to score a goal against the Falcons. In last season's meeting, Air Force put up a season-best three goals on the Trailblazers with strikes from Thaddaeus Dewing (7'), Federico Mion (66'), and Greg Hill (85'). The Falcon defense proved to be too much for Utah Tech as the Trailblazers were only able to fire off two shots per half with three coming on target all match.
COMMON OPPONENTS
UVU and AF share two common opponents in Seattle U and San Jose State. The Wolverines and Falcons both fell to Seattle (SU 2, AF 0; SU 5, UVU 2). SJSU bested Air Force, 1-0, and tied Utah Valley at one.
Utah Tech and Air Force have three common opponents in San Francsico, Sacramento State, and San Jose State. The Falcons tied San Francisco at two while Utah Tech lost, 1-0. The Trailblazers and Falcons both lost to Sacramento and SJSU (SAC ST 1, UT 0; SAC ST 3, AF 1), (SJSU 3, UT 0; SJSU 1, AF 0).
AIR FORCE SCORERS
Luke Hill and Remi Smith lead the squad with three goals apiece. Smith is 2-2 in PKs while Hill scored one at the penalty line. Hill has 22 shots to his credit this season, 10 on goal. Smith has taken eight shots on target in 13 total attempts. Carter Rizzo and Aidan Grubbs scored their first career goals while Federico Mion notched his first of the season to round out AF's nine goals on the 2023 campaign.
UP NEXT
The Falcons return home for the first of a three-match home stint to wrap up the regular season. The Falcons host UTRGV on Thursday (Oct. 19). Action at Cadet Soccer Stadium is slated for 4 p.m. MT. The match against the Vaqueros will be AF's only match of the week.
LAST WEEK
In the Falcons' only match of the week, UNLV scored a goal in the 87th minute to overcome Air Force, 2-1, Sunday afternoon, at Cadet Soccer Stadium. AF's Federico Mion scored the Falcons' only goal.
BREAK THE SEAL
Air Force is off to a bumpy start in 2023; however, in 2021 the Falcons got off to an 0-3 start and ultimately battled to a WAC tournament berth. Last season (2022), the Falcons were winless in their first six matches but turned it around with seven-straight wins and another WAC tournament berth. The last time Air Force was winless this deep into the season was in 2013. When the dust settles on October 29, the top six teams in the league will qualify for the post-season tournament.
