USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- The Air Force volleyball team dropped a four-set decision to Wyoming this morning (Oct. 14) at Cadet East Gym, as they fell in 16-25, 27-25, 20-25, 22-25 sets.
Â
Senior Joi Harvey and junior Mac Russ combined for 27 of the team's 51 kills, as the pair tallied 14 and 13, respectively. The senior added seven blocks, including four solo stops, while hitting at a .458 clip (14-3-24). Classmate Caroline Reinkensmeyer added 44 assists, three service aces and three blocks (one solo, two assisted), while sophomore Jordan Suan rounded out the team's stat leaders with 15 digs.
Â
Wyoming jumped on the Falcons early, outscoring the home team 9-1 in the opening 10 plays. Sophomore Savanah Johnson came in off the bench to score three kills and spark a 6-1 run by the Falcons (7-11). Two more kills from Harvey, as well as a strike from Reinkensmeyer pulled the Falcons within three (13-16), but Wyoming scored nine of the final 12 points to take the 25-16 win.
Â
Kills from Bible, Harvey and Tschuor, as well as an ace from Reinkensmeyer, helped Air Force take a 6-4 lead in the second set, while another strike from Tschuor and an ace from Suan kept the Falcons with a two-point lead (12-10). A kill from Tschuor sent Reinkensmeyer back to the serving line for a 5-0 run that included a kill and block from Harvey (17-11), while the junior added a diving save that led to another Harvey score (18-14). The Cowgirls chipped away at the Falcons' lead and eventually tied the set at 23. Russ (24-23), Tschuor (25-24) and Harvey (26-25) tallied set-leading kills, before a Wyoming error gave Air Force the two-point win (27-25) that tied the match at one set apiece.
Â
The Cowgirls took an early 9-4 lead in the third, but Tschuor and Harvey combined for seven-straight Air Force points, as the Falcons pulled within one at the 13-14 mark. Tschuor registered two kills and an ace during the run, while Harvey posted two kills, one solo block and teamed up with sophomore Ashley Bible for another stop during that stretch. A pair of strikes from Russ and an ace from Bible evened the set at 16, while another score from Russ tied the set 17. Wyoming scored the next three points to retake the lead and, despite a pair of kills from Harvey, closed the set on a 5-2 run to take the 25-20 win.
Â
Harvey traded the opening points of the fourth set with Wyoming, while a senior Aaryn Scires kill and a Russ/Reinkensmeyer block evened the score at four. Junior Mekayla Dedo registered a kill and ace on back-to-back plays during a 3-0 Air Force run, while consecutive scores from Harvey (kill, block with Reinkensmeyer) gave the Falcons at 10-7 lead. The Cowgirls came back to tie the set at 12 and 14, while a kill from Russ sent Air Force into the media timeout with a narrow 15-14 advantage. The teams traded more points coming out of the break, while Reinkensmeyer (16-15) and Tschuor (17-16) producing set-leading kills. Another ace from Tschuor gave the Falcons at two-point lead (19-17) and Air Force maintained a narrow margin off of kills from Harvey (20-19) and Bible (22-21), but Wyoming scored the final four points for the 25-22 victory.
