USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – Backed by its third-best offensive performance of the season (.321), the Air Force volleyball team rolled to an easy sweep of San Diego State this afternoon (Oct. 28) at Cadet East Gym, Surrendering the lead just once during the three-set match, the Falcons improved to 14-9 overall with the 25-17, 25-18, 25-18 victory.
The Falcons, who completed the season sweep of the Aztecs for just the second time in a series that dates back to 1996, held the Aztecs to just .065 hitting on the day – Air Force's lowest opponent average since the August opener and its lowest of the conference campaign by more than 50 points.
Backed by a match-high nine from seniors Aaryn Scires and Joi Harvey, six different Falcons registered kills during the contest. Junior Mac Russ hit .462 on the day with seven kills on 13 swings and just one error, while Harvey (.438, 9-2-16) and Scires (.375, 9-3-16) also hit over 350. Harvey and Russ led the team at the net with five blocks apiece (two solo, three assisted for Harvey; one solo, four assisted for Russ), as six different Falcons combined for 10.0 stops. Junior Ella Tschuor served up a career-best four aces, while senior Caroline Reinkensmeyer tallied 31 assists and sophomore Jordan Suan led the way with nine digs.
Russ opened the scoring for Air Force, tallying a kill and block (assisted by sophomore Ashley Bible) for the first two points of the match, while a 6-0 run that included three Tschuor aces and a pair of Scires kills, quickly pushed the Falcons' advantage out to seven (10-3). Harvey added a pair of scores, as the Falcons doubled the Aztecs at the 14-7 mark. Two more kills from Scires maintained the seven-point margin (20-13), while Russ ended the match as she started it – recording a kill and block (assisted with Tschuor this time) on the final two plays to give Air Force the 25-17 win.
Air Force scored first in the second and maintained the lead as the teams traded the first four scores. A pair of kills from Scires broke the back-and-forth scoring, while two-straight kills from Reinkensmeyer gave Air Force a 6-3 lead. A pair of solo stops from Harvey pushed the Falcons into double figures (19-7), while two kills from both Bible and Russ helped Air Force extend its lead to nine (17-8). Three kills from Tschuor gave the Falcons a 20-13 lead, while a Bible/Harvey block secured the Falcons' 25-18 win.
The Falcons recorded the opening point of the third set, but the Aztecs took their first lead two plays later and held the advantage, despite set-tying kills from Harvey (four-all, five), Scires (six) and Bible (seven, eight). Air Force retook the lead on the next play, while a kill from Reinkensmeyer broke a nine-all tie by San Diego State. Kills from Tschuor, Scires and Harvey, as well as four Aztec errors, helped Air Force pull away, while Tschuor's career-high fourth ace gave the Falcons a 17-11 lead. Harvey scored Air Force's next three points (20-14), while another kill from Russ secured the sweep with a 25-18 win – the Falcons' third "Saturday Sweep" of the conference season.
The Falcons head back out on the road next week (Nov. 2-4) for conference contests against league-leader Utah State – whose only MW loss is courtesy of the Falcons – and Boise State.
