LOGAN, Utah -- The Air Force volleyball team dropped a three-set decision to conference-leader Utah State on Thursday (Nov. 2) night in Logan. The Aggies, who are receiving votes in the AVCA national coaches' poll and ranked No. 17 in the RPI, used the 25-17, 25-21, 25-20 contest to split the season series with Falcons.
Senior Caroline Reinkensmeyer posted match-high marks in assists (29), digs (11) and aces (one) tonight at the Wayne Estes Center, while classmate Joi Harvey paced the Falcons with 10 kills on .381 hitting and junior Ella Tschuor recorded a team-high two blocks, including one solo stop.
A kill from junior Mac Russ gave the Falcons an early 2-1 lead, but the Aggies quickly responded with eight of the next nine points to send Air Force into a timeout and a 3-9 deficit. Kills from Scires, Reinkensmeyer and sophomore Ashley Bible put the Falcons in double figures, while a second strike from Russ brought the Falcons within three (11-14). Tschuor put down a pair of kills and another Scires score kept the Falcons within four (14-18). The Aggies pulled away during a 6-1 run and, despite a pair of scores from Reinkensmeyer (kill, service ace), Utah State took the opening set by a 25-17 margin.
Utah State took an early 5-2 lead to start the second, before kills from Russ and Bible helped the Falcons tie the score at five. A solo block from Tschuor gave Air Force a 7-6 lead, while back-to-back kills from Harvey and Scires tied the score at 11. Another Scires strike evened the set at 12, but the Aggies scored the next six points – and eight of the next nine – to take a seven-point lead (20-13). A solo block from sophomore Savanah Johnon kicked off a 6-1 Air Force run that included a pair of scores from Tschuor and brought the Falcons within two at the 19-21 mark. Scires and Harvey added kills, but Utah State earned the final point for the 25-21 win.
Kills from Harvey and freshman Annamaria Ramos got the scoring started in the third (2-1), while Harvey added another kill during a back-and-forth stretch that included four ties enroute to a five-all score. After Ramos tied the set at six, the Aggies used a 6-1 run to take a 12-7 advantage. Harvey, who accounted for the Falcons' only score of that stretch, put down a strike that sparked a 7-0 run by the Falcons. Backed by two more points from the senior (kill, block with Tschuor), the Falcons turned a five-point deficit into a two-point lead (14-12). The Aggies responded with a run of their own, scoring eight of the next nine to go ahead by a 20-15 margin. Russ and Reinkensmeyer added kills, while back-to-back scores from Harvey and Ramos pulled the Falcons within three (20-23), but Utah State completed the sweep with the 25-20 win.
Air Force remains on the road Saturday (Nov. 4), when it travels to Boise State for a noon (MT) contest.
