Falcons Sweep Fresno State on Senior Day

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- The record-setting season continued for the Air Force volleyball team this afternoon (Nov. 11), as the Falcons downed Fresno State in straight sets for their 17th overall victory of the year – a total that equals the highest number of single-season wins for Air Force at the Division I total. The Falcons improved to 9-7 in Mountain West action with the 25-22, 25-22, 25-20 victory over the Bulldogs during Senior Day at Cadet East Gym.
It was a well-balanced attack for the Falcons, who hit .318 for the day – the fourth-best hitting performance of the season, as junior Ella Tschuor (10), senior Joi Harvey (nine), junior Mac Russ (nine), freshman Annamaria Ramos (eight) and senior Aaryn Scires (eight) combined for 44 of the team's 49 kills – with senior Caroline Reinkensmeyer accounting for the final five kills on a match-high .455 performance.
Reinkensmeyer added 33 assists and tied for the team lead in service aces (two, with freshman Sophia Dasilva) and digs (12, with sophomore Jordan Suan), while Ramos posted three blocks, including her second solo stop of the year.
Kills from Harvey, Scires and Tschuor got the Falcons off to a fast 3-1 start, but the Bulldogs scored seven points during a nine-play stretch to take a 9-6 lead. Air Force pulled within one (9-10) off an ace from Suan, while Air Force earned set-tying kills from Scires (11-11, 13-13), Reinkensmeyer (12-12) and Russ (14-14) A solo block from Ramos gave Air Force the lead during a 5-0 Air Force run that included an ace from Dasilva and ended with Air Force holding an 18-15 lead. Two kills from Tschuor pushed the Falcons' lead to 21-17, while scores from Harvey and Ramos secured the opening 25-22 win.
Fresno State struck first in the second, but a kill from Reinkensmeyer and a Ramos/Russ block helped Air Force tie the set at four. The teams traded the next several points, before Reinkensmeyer served up an ace to give Air Force a 9-8 lead. The Bulldogs retook the lead (14-13), before Ramos, Russ and Tschuor responded with kills to give Air Force the lead at the 16-15 mark. Harvey and Scires added a block to the Falcons' stat line at the 20-18 mark and, despite a set-tying score by Fresno State at 21-all, Ramos and Russ teamed up for two kills apiece to give Air Force another 25-22 victory.
Harvey came out strong in the third set, putting down three kills to lead Air Force to an early 4-2 lead. Ramos and Russ helped Air Force double-up the Bulldogs at the 8-4 mark, while kills from Tschuor and Reinkensmeyer, as well as a Harvey/Ramos block, pushed the Falcons' lead to four (13-9). Back-to-back strikes from Scires extended the advantage to five (15-10) – a margin the Falcons held until the 19-14 mark. A six-score run by the Bulldogs gave the visitors a 20-19 lead, but Air Force responded with the final six scores, including a kill and solo block from Tschuor, completed the sweep with the 25-20.
Air Force, which also defeated the Bulldogs in the MW-opener, completed just the second series victory over Fresno State in program history.
The Falcons close out the regular season next week, when they travel to Wyoming (Thursday, Nov. 16) and Colorado State (Saturday, Nov. 18) for the final two contests of the Mountain West season.
