SCOUTING THE COWGIRLS
Wyoming is currently 18-9 on the year and 7-9 in conference play after splitting last year's road swing to San Diego State (3-1 win) and UNLV (0-3 loss). Backed by a league-leading 1.31 per-set average from Sarah Holcomb and a 1.08 mark from Tierney Barlow (seventh), the Cowgirls are ranked second in the conference in blocks at 2.64. Wyoming is also ranked among the top half of the Mountain West in opponent hitting (.216, fourth) and assists (12.10, fifth), while Barlow is also ranked seventh in hitting with a .345 average.
SCOUTING THE RAMS
Colorado State, which will host New Mexico on Thursday, enters the week 16-11 overall and 10-6 in the Mountain West. The Rams, who split last week's trip to UNLV (2-3 loss) and San Diego State (3-0 win), currently lead the conference in hitting (.287) and are ranked among the top-three in kills (13.30) and assists (12.27). Individually, CSU boasts two league leaders – Naeemah Weathers (.435 hitting) and Emery Herman (10.56 assists per set, 0.45 service aces), while Karina Leber is ranked third in hitting (.382) and Malaya Jones holds the same ranking in kills (3.70).
AIR FORCE IN THE CONFERENCE
Joi Harvey is ranked second in hitting during conference matches (.423), while Caroline Reinkensmeyer moved up to second in assists with a 10.10 per-set average. Air Force, which is ranked fourth in team hitting (.245), boasts two of the five most accurate attackers in the league, as Mac Russ ranked fifth behind Harvey with a .353 average. A full list of Falcons in the conference rankings can be found on Page 3 of this release.
AIR FORCE IN THE NATION
Joi Harvey's current .393 hitting percentage is ranked among the nation's Top 25 (25th), while Mac Russ' 14.0 blocks against UT Arlington during the first weekend is tied for the fourth-best single-match outing of the year.
RAMOS NAMED MW FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
After a strong weekend that helped Air Force to a perfect 2-0 week in league play, Annamaria Ramos was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Week on Nov. 13. Averaging 3.17 kills-per-set on .326 hitting as the Falcons swept Nevada and Fresno State, Ramos set – or matched – career-high totals in kills, hitting, assists, digs, solo blocks, assisted blocks and total blocks.
GET OUT THE BROOMS
With a straight-set victory over Fresno State on Nov. 11, the Falcons closed out the home portion of the 2023 season with three-straight sweeps (San Diego State, Nevada, Fresno State) – and 3-0 victories in four of their final five home contests. In addition, those wins helped Air Force complete season sweeps of the Aztecs, Wolfpack and Bulldogs (the Falcons only faced the Spartans once in 2023).
FALCONS CLAIM SEASON-WIN NO. 17
Air Force recorded its program-record 17th win of the season on Nov. 11, as it defeated Fresno State in straight 25-22, 25-22, 25-20 sets. That victory equals the highest number of single-season wins for the Falcons at the Division I level, matching the total set by the 1999 and 2018 teams.
BLOCKING IT OUT
Joi Harvey and Mac Russ both surpassed the 100-block plateau for the second-straight season – marking the first time at the Division I level that teammates have accomplished reached triple-digit stops in back-to-back years. In fact, only one other Falcon at the DI level has reached 100 blocks in multiple years (Piper Heineck, 2016-2017).
MAKING HISTORY WITH EIGHTH CONFERENCE WIN
During a sweep of Nevada on Nov. 9, Air Force recorded its eighth victory of the Mountain West season – a win that set a new Academy Record for conference victories in a single year at the Division I level. With the win, the Falcons bettered the previous mark of seven that the program has accomplished five times – including four with head coach Keith Barnett on the sidelines.
