HONOLULU – Despite stretches of play worthy of an upset, the Air Force women's basketball team fell 73-53 at the hands of the Washington Huskies on Saturday afternoon in game two of the Rainbow Wahine Showdown.
The Falcons (4-2) were led in scoring for the second game in as many days by sophomore Milahnie Perry, posting 15 in the contest; freshman Alexis Cortez set a new career high, scoring ten behind a fourth-quarter- leading eight points.
In the opening quarter, the Huskies got out in front early after a quick seven 7-0 run. Scoring for the Falcons eventually settled in, as Air Force opened on a steal from senior Taylor Britt, who drove the length of the floor to find Madison Smith under the Washington basket. After a Milahnie Perry three on the following possession, the Falcons managed to climb back into a one-possession game at 7-5. Air Force forced Washington into a 1-8 stretch for a four-minute period down the closing minutes of the first quarter, before a pair of fast-breaks and an and-one opportunity pushed the Huskies back out to a 14-8 lead with just over a minute to go.
The Huskies' continued to reap the benefits of missed shots in the second, as a 7-1 start for Washington in the quarter pushed Washington's lead out to double-digits. Air Force went 2-15 to close out the second half, with made baskets from both Dasha Macmillan (5 pts, 4 reb, 2 assists) and a well-guarded three-pointer out in the left corner from Keelie O'Hollaren (6 pts 1 reb) breathed life into the Air Force offense. Washington went into halftime sporting a 35-19 lead over the Falcons.
Air Force looked very much adjusted and prepared coming out of the locker room to take on the second half, as the Falcons opened on an 11-2 run behind points from its more seasoned members to cut Washington's lead back to seven. on the following Air Force possession, a three from freshman Jayda McNabb along left wing cut Washington's lead to six. But the Huskies answered by outscoring Air Force 18-3 over the remainder of the quarter – a run broken up only by a jumper from Cortez near the elbow off her own rebound.
The Falcons ultimately ended up outscoring Washington 17-16 in the fourth quarter, but the damage had already been done; the Huskies (6-0) held Air Force at-length through the final frame, despite Cortez's eight-point outburst.
