U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Austin Park made 22 saves and Willie Reim had a goal and an assist as Air Force defeated Canisius, 2-1, in an Atlantic Hockey game Monday, Feb. 13, at the Academy's Cadet Ice Arena. Air Force (12-17-2, 8-12-1 AHA) earned three points in the standings and jumped into ninth place, four points behind Canisius (11-15-3, 9-9-3 AHA) for the final playoff spot in the conference.
Early in the game, Canisius' Hudson Lambert was called for a major penalty for a hit on Nate Horn. Griff goalie Jacob Barczewski stopped the first eight Falcon shots on the power play before the Falcons broke through. Luke Rowe set up Willie Reim at the strong post and the senior netted his 11th of the season and sixth in his last six games. Brandon Koch also assisted as the Falcons took a 1-0 lead at 7:22. Canisius tied the game three minutes later after winning a battle in the corner. Keaton Mastrodonato walked out of the corner and set up Ryan Miotto for his 10th of the season at 10:38 to tie the game. Air Force outshot Canisius, 20-8, in the period.
Air Force took a 2-1 lead with 1:12 left in the second period. Rowe's first shot hit Reim, but his second was redirected at the hash marks by Clayton Cosentino for his sixth of the season.
In the third period, the Falcons killed two penalties and Park made 10 saves to preserve the 2-1 win.
Air Force outshot Canisius, 54-23. The 54 shots were a season high for the Falcons. Canisius goalie Jacob Barczewski made a career high 52 saves. Air Force was 1-for-5 on the power play and killed all four of the Griffs' man-advantages. The last time Air Force had 50 or more shots in a game came in the overtime win at Army with 51 shots on March 11, 2022.
"Their goalie was the star of the game," head coach Frank Serratore said. "But our goalie was good too. Austin Park made some timely saves for us tonight. Our special teams came through for us, we played with the lead and Park was so cool in there. If we didn't have that great composure, Barczewski could have stolen that game. But this time of year, good teams just find ways to get it done. The games are rarely a thing of beauty, but give our guys credit, they busted their butts for 60 minutes."
The Falcons and Griffs conclude the two-game league series Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 7:05 pm MT at the Cadet Ice Arena.
