U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Canisius scored two goals in the second period and two late in the third for a 4-1 win over Air Force in an Atlantic Hockey game Tuesday, Feb. 14, at the Academy's Cadet Ice Arena. The two teams split the two-game series.
Canisius (12-15-3, 10-9-3 AHA) took the first five shots of the game, but all were turned away by Falcon goalie Austin Park. Air Force didn't get its first shot until 7:30 into the game. Air Force (12-18-2, 8-13-1 AHA) took the early lead on the rush. Willie Reim started the rush down the right side and put a shot off the pads of goalie John Hawthorne. Clayton Cosentino tipped a puck to Nate Horn who netted his eighth of the season at 14:21.
The Griffs started the second period by scoring two goals in a span of 30 seconds. Randy Hernandez tied the game on the rush with a wrister from the right circle at 2:14. Canisius took its first lead of the series when Keaton Mastrodonato scored with a wrap-around at 2:44.
In the third period, it seemed Air Force tied the game at 5:25 when Will Gavin put back a shot by Luke Rowe. However, the goal was disallowed due to a high stick. Late in the period, the Griffs scored two goals in a span of 16 seconds. Cody Schiavon's shot bounced off the back wall and Grant Loven tucked in the rebound with 3:08 left. The goal was waved off on the ice, but video replay showed a good goal for a 3-1 Canisius lead. After the ensuing faceoff, Air Force pulled the goalie, but Mastrodonato scored into the empty net with 2:52 remaining.
Air Force outshot Canisius, 29-25. Each team was 0-for-4 on the power play. John Hawthorne made 28 saves for the Griffs while Austin Park made 21 for the Falcons.
"I felt good about getting through the first period with the lead," head coach Frank Serratore said. "Canisius was a different team than last night. They competed to a man. We needed to match their intensity and I didn't think we did.The better team won tonight and they were committed. We needed to win that third period and we didn't get it done."
