Air Force Opens Wing Open Tournament

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – Air Force junior Madigan Starr captured the first Wing Open title of the 2023 tournament this afternoon (Feb. 17), as the Air Force boxing team kicked off its annual Wing Open Tournament in the Cadet Gym Boxing Room.
Starr, competing on a card that included one quarterfinal and five semifinal bouts, captured the women's 119-pound title in the only championship of the day, earning a decision over sophomore Carmyn Grubbs.
Teammates Alexandra Waller, Lexi Lee and Shelby Paul claimed semifinal victories on Friday to advance to the second round. Waller, a freshman, defeated senior Susan Yeung in the 112-pound semifinal, while Lee downed fellow junior Morgan Roberts at 147 pounds and Paul earned a 156-pound decision over junior Katie Bush.
On the men's side, junior Angelo Ganac won his 185-pound semifinal over freshman Dylan Barrios, while freshman Jake Edwards defeated classmate Ian Kim after forcing the referee to stop their contest in the second round. In the only quarterfinal bout on the night, sophomore Robert Marzicola earned a decision over Jonathon Watson at 165 pounds.
The Wing Open Tournament continues next Friday (Feb. 24) with the second round of competition.
