SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Air Force women's tennis team saw its six-match win streak snapped on Saturday afternoon, as the Falcons fell, 4-2, at San Jose State on Saturday afternoon.
The Falcons (10-9, 6-2 MW) maintain an unblemished 8-0 doubles record against Mountain West opponents after opening Saturday's contest with their 16th doubles victory of the spring. On court two, Isabella Flodin/Abby Cotuna claimed their set first, defeating San Jose's Irena Muradyan/Rozalina Youseva, 6-2, earning their fifth-straight win and improving to 12-3.
On line three, it was Courtney Swift/Arianna Van Houweling who delivered a 7-5 doubles-clinching win over Olaya Iglesias/Lara Marco Mas, earning their fifth dual doubles win and handing their opponents their first loss.
In singles, Cotuna earned her seventh win of the spring, defeating Raquel Pereira, 6-2, 6-0.
The Falcons' 2-0 lead was quickly cut back to one with a San Jose (9-10, 4-4 MW) win on court two, shortly followed by two more on courts three and four to threaten a Spartan clinch, before senior Sydney Fitch fell in a set-two tiebreaker on line one, sealing the win for SJSU.
Van Houweling on court six, facing off against San Jose's Olaya Iglesias, led 2-0 in the third set before the match was called.
From Coach Gidley:
"I'm very proud of this team for their incredible effort and fight. San Jose definitely used the home court to their advantage and that was the small difference today. They had their senior day crowd and competing at sea level with their style of play.
"The effort and fight was there for our team. We're still undefeated in league play in doubles, so that is an accomplishment in itself.
Heading into the final week of play, the team is now sitting in second place. At the start of conference play, the team was picked to finish 11th, so that is certainly progress - Along with improving a 155 spots in the ITA rankings.
"It's going to be an in-state, border war weekend in Fort Collins to close the regular season. If the team goes 2-0 for the weekend, we will share first place for the regular season Mountain West conference Championships, so the stakes are certainly high heading into the final weekend. I am just excited for this team and the great position they have put themselves in."
