U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Senior Isaac Layne tied for second after the final round of the inaugural Commander-in-Chief's Cup, Tuesday, April 18, at the Robert Trent Jones Club in Gainesville, Va.
Layne shot a 70 (-2) in the first round, tying the best round by a Falcon this season and shot 223 over the 54-hole tournament. Navy's Keegan Shreves won the individual title at 218. Layne, along with Navy's Chip Deegan and Army's Joshua Kim all tied for second. In the final group, Layne birdied two of his last three holes to secure the second-place tie. Layne's 11 birdies were the most of any player in the tournament.
Sophomore Cameron Kahle tied for sixth overall with a 227, followed by Aaron Kuznik (228), Brooks Morrell (230), Christopher Park (232), Alvaro Fonseca (234), Ted Davenport (242) and Max Heupel (250).
In the final round, Kuznik shot a collegiate career best 70, which tied as the best round of the day in the tournament. On the back nine, Kuznik made four straight birdies for a 33 on his final nine. Also in the final round, Morrell eagled the par-5, 555-yard eighth hole by reaching the green in two and sinking the putt. His eagle was one of just seven in tournament.
In most college tournaments, five golfers play for each team and the top four count. However, in the C-in-C Cup, teams play eight players with the top six counting.
Army won the inaugural tournament based on a tiebreaker as both the Black Knights and Navy each shot a 54-hole team score of 1360. Air Force was third at 1373.
Air Force will close out the season at the Mountain West Championships, Friday-Sunday, April 28-30, in Tucson, Ariz.
