MOON TOWNSHIP – Air Force fell to the top-seeded Utah Utes, 11-9, in the ASUN Championship finals, Sunday afternoon at Joe Walton Stadium. The Falcons finalize the 2023 campaign at 11-6 overall with a second-place finish in the league (7-2).
Eight Falcons put up nine goals led by Josh Yago with two to his credit. ASUN Player of the Year and AF points leader Brandon Dodd put three points with two assists and a goal. Other Falcons to score were All-ASUN first teamer Aidan Tolen, Matt Rubino, Gavin Peene, Ethan Grandolfo, Cooper Rich and Shad Bruce.
Dodd impacted the AF record book in multiple ways in his final game as a Falcon. His 75 points on the season is the most by any Falcon to date. His 34 assists on the season is the most single-season assists by any Falcon to date. His 41 goals on the season is the second-best behind Mike Crampton's 48 (2011-2014). Dodd's 178 career points is the second-most by any Falcon since joining an all Div. I lacrosse league. His 101 career goals is fourth-most in the record books while his 75 career assist ties for third.
Senior teammate and co-team captain Jason Rose made 11 saves on the day, bringing his season total 182 saves, the most single season saves by a Falcon in the modern era. Rose concludes his time at Air Force with 424 career saves—third-most in program history.
Senior co-team captain Tommy Hellman will hang up his AF jersey with 48 career games under his belt, the most by any current Falcon.
The tough AF defense caused nine of Utah's 20 turnovers, led by James Chastain with four to his credit. The Falcons struggled at the center dot, winning just 2-of-23 attempts. Despite the face off disparity, the Air Force defense held Utah below their season goals average.
Utah (12-4, 9-0 ASUN) earned the program's first-ever conference title and NCAA Tournament berth. The Utes were led by Carson Moyer's four-goal performance.
