USAF ACADEMY – Falcon lacrosse dropped a 16-10 loss in the ASUN Conference opener Saturday afternoon at Falcon Stadium. Air Force dropped to 2-7 on the year while the Dolphins improved to 5-4.
The Falcons struggled to find an offensive rhythm in the first half, scoring just one goal in the first quarter and two more in the second quarter. JU put up 12 goals in the first half.
Air Force got traction in the second half but had a tall hill to climb. AF held the Dolphins to just four second-half goals while scoring seven of their own. Despite the rally, the trench was too deep to climb out of.
Senior attack man Caelan Driggs led the offensive effort with three goals and a pair of helps. Senior teammates Cole Rassas and Luke Vrsansky put up a pair of goals each. Freshman attacker Christian Schweiger, scoring a goal in every game but one this season, tallied a goal and assist. Lee Krotee and Tyler Smart rounded out the scoring effort with a goal each.
The Falcons, struggling at the center dot this season, won just 10 faceoffs in 30 attempts, Rogan Kane leading with seven faceoff wins in 16 shows. Senior LSM Cole Cunningham paced the defense and center field with three caused turnovers and four ground balls. He leads the team in both stat categories.
JU's Nicky Brown had an impressive showing with four goals and seven assists to guide the Dolphins to victory. Zane Czeschin also scored four goals while JU scoring leader Jack Taylor was good for three goals and four helps.
Next up, the Falcons take flight to Louisville, Kentucky, to take on Bellarmine in ASUN Conference action. Face off at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium is slated for 12 p.m. ET. Air Force is 16-4 against the Knights all-time and 5-3 when playing in Kentucky. AF has won 11 of the last 12 meetings.
