U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – True-to-form for head coach Chris Gobrecht and company, the 48th season of Air Force women's basketball has been tailor-made as an opportunity for Gobrecht's contingent of cadets to compete among some of the best in the nation on their mission for a Mountain West title.
The Air Force 2023-24 slate, announced on Wednesday, places the Falcons in competition against four Power Five opponents, three 2023 NCAA Tournament contestants and a pair of programs which appeared in the AP Top-25 in 2022-23 - both of which are counted among the 15 teams being hosted in Clune Arena for 2023-24. Air Force will compete in all five U.S. time zones, including a Thanksgiving weekend appearance in the Rainbow Wahine Showdown, a four-team tournament hosted by Hawaii in Honolulu on Nov. 24-26.
All dates/times are not final and remain subject to change:
Non-Conference:
After debuting at Clune against northern neighbor Denver on Nov. 6, the Falcons head down into the Lone Star State to face off against Houston on Nov. 10 for the first time in program history, testing the Cougars' newly minted Power Five status as a year-one member of the Big 12 Conference. Air Force's game at UH marks its first visit to the Houston metro since the 2011-12 season and a return to home territory for senior Kayla Pilson.
Air Force returns to the Academy for a pair of contests at Clune in which the Falcons face Regis (Nov. 14) before hosting Army (Nov. 17) on Alumni Weekend, representing West Point women's basketball's first visit to USAFA since 2019.
The Rainbow Wahine Showdown, set for Nov. 24-26 in Honolulu, will pit the Falcons against Hawaii (Nov. 24), Washington (Nov. 25) and Idaho State (Nov. 26), with viewer information to be announced at a later date. The three-day event marks Air Force's first visit to O'ahu since 1997 and a homecoming for junior Jo Huntimer, who, prior to arriving at USAFA, competed at 'Iolani School less than a mile from the host venue.
December opens for the Falcons on a four-game homestand, highlighted by the return of Colorado to Clune on Dec. 2 for the third time in the Gobrecht era and fourth in program history. CU closed 2023 with a 25-9 record, a Sweet 16 run in the NCAA Tournament and the No. 15 spot in final AP poll of 2022-23. Last season, the Falcons trailed CU by just a single possession heading into the final minute of regulation in Boulder before falling 71-63 (Nov. 19).
The last three home games of 2023 bring UCCS (Dec. 5) Northern Colorado (Dec. 9) and Weber State (Dec. 16) to Clune.
The final leg of non-conference competition for Air Force sends the Falcons out east, as they head to South Carolina to face Clemson for the first time in program history on Dec. 19, followed by a return to Texas on Dec. 21 to square off against SMU for the Falcons' first visit to the Dallas-Ft. Worth area since 2012. Air Force's game with SMU also marks a return home for a number of Falcons; senior Dasha Macmillan (Colleyville) and newcomers Jordyn DeVaughn (Little Elm) and Alexis Cortez (Allen) each claim Dallas as home, all having hailed from within 30 miles of the SMU campus.
Mountain West:
Returning from Christmas break, Air Force opens Mountain West play on the road for a Dec. 30 debut at Fresno State before ringing in the New Year with a pair of home bouts with San Diego State (Jan. 3) and Wyoming (Jan. 6).
Week three splits venues for the Falcons, as Air Force heads to Reno to face Nevada on Jan. 10, followed up by hosting UNLV on the 13th – a date marked on the calendars of more than one program in Clune Arena, as Air Force hockey hosts AIC and men's basketball faces San Jose State in addition to the women's game against the Rebels. UNLV, the current reigning Mountain West champion, climbed as high as 22 in the previous season's AP poll.
The following two weeks keep Air Force local, as the Falcons head up to Fort Collins to face CSU on Jan. 17 and conclude the week on a bye before doubling back and traveling to Laramie to square off against Wyoming on Jan. 24.
Jan. 27-Feb. 7, Air Force plays three of its next four contests at home, hosting New Mexico (Jan. 27), CSU (Jan. 31) and Nevada (Feb. 7), with an away game at San Jose in between (Feb. 3).
Feb. 10, the Falcons will play visitor at Utah State before returning to the Academy to host a rematch with Fresno State on the 14th.
Air Force makes its return to Las Vegas on Feb. 17 to play UNLV before heading out to San Diego to face SDSU on Feb. 21.
The Falcons close their home schedule in week 10, completing both series against San Jose State (Feb. 24) and Utah State (Feb. 28) before finishing regular season competition at Boise State on March 2.
Coach G's Outlook on 2023-24:
"We will continue to challenge our team against some of the best in the nation as we prepare for competing in the Mountain West at a time when the conference is as strong as it's ever been. Games against the likes of Colorado, Washington, Houston, and Clemson will really be eye-opening for a team that is half composed of freshmen. We are excited to be hosting Army on Alumni Weekend. Fans can count on a continuation of relentless defense and wide-open offense that makes this team fun to watch and all games an adventure!"
