
Heupel leads Falcons on day one of Folds of Honor

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. – Senior Maxwell Heupel led the Air Force golf team in the opening round of the Folds of Honor Collegiate, Monday, Sept. 4, at the American Dunes Golf Club in Grand Haven, Mich. Heupel shot a career-best 71 (even) in the first round of the season-opening tournament and sits in 15th place among the 90 golfers in the 18-team event.
Heupel's round included two birdies and an eagle on the par-4, 428-yard 17th hole by holing out from the fairway. Sophomore Alvaro Fonseca shot a 73 (+2) in the opening round with two birdies and 10 pars. Fonseca matched his second-best collegiate round. Freshman Eli Huntington, playing his first collegiate tournament shot 74 (+3), including a pair of eagles by driving the green and one-putting on the par-5 6th and 18th. Huntington was the only player in the field with two eagles. Junior Cameron Kahle shot 79.
After the first 18 holes, Air Force is the top service academy. The Falcons are tied for 13th with a 297 (+13). Navy is 16th at 311 and Army is 17th at 314. Just two teams came in under par as South Carolina leads the field at 282 (-2) and Arizona is second at 283 (-1). Air Force is two strokes ahead of Kansas and just six shots behind Florida State and the host school, Michigan State.
With two eagles from Huntington and one from Heupel, the Falcons' three eagles were the most of any team in the tournament. Huntington played the three, par-5's, in four-under par.
The second round begins at 11:40 ET on Tuesday, Sept. 5. The final round of the tournament will be Wednesday, Sept. 6, at the American Dunes Golf Club. The tournament is live on Golf Channel from 4-7 pm ET each day.
