DENVER- Less than a day after competing at Cadet Nataorium, Air Force traveled to Denver for the annual Colorado Sprint Championships where the Falcons placed second among the three competing teams with 91.00 points.
"It was a great weekend of racing for us," said head swimming coach Rob Clayton. "It was another huge step forward this week to get ready for the WAC Championships."
Given the knockout stages of each swim, a handful of Falcons managed to advance to their respective final rounds.
C1C Joseph Moore was the lone Falcon to notch an event win, as the senior edged out a victory in the 50 Butterfly Finals following a time of 22.05. His time in the event now stands a personal best.
"The weekend was highlighted by Joseph Moore," said Clayton. "He just did a fantastic job."
James Winterfield earned one of the four slots in the 50 Backstroke Finals, representing Air Force with a time of 23.27. Placing fourth, the time becomes the sophomore's new career best.
Winterfield also finished second in the 200 Freestyle (1:38.61) for a new season-best, and third in the 200 IM (1:51.06).
"James had a great showing all weekend long," Clayton added. "He's been much faster than he's been all season and really looks ready to go."
In the 50 Breaststroke, Tommy Nagle offered a solid showing, finishing in a tight second-place standing. Nagle touched out at 25.28 to secure a new personal best.
"Tommy put together some super swims this weekend as well," said Clayton.
The Air Force 200 Medley Relay team placed third, as the foursome of Moore, Winterfield, Bridon Rosales and Chase Dwornicki combined for a time of 1:30.79. The final swim of the day saw Moore, Dwornicki, Gavin Peterman, and Kai Tiede place fourth in the 200 Freestyle Relay, closing with a 1:23.84.
"I'm very proud of the guys and the way they fought and persevered," Clayton said.
Next, the divers will take over Cadet Natatorium, as the Falcons host the Air Force Diving Invitational starting Thursday, February 1.
