COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado College defenseman Max Burkholder scored the game-winner at 1:08 of overtime as the eighth-ranked Tigers defeated Air Force, 3-2, in a non-conference game, Friday, Nov. 1, at Robson Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Air Force (4-5-0) had not scored the first goal in a game all season … until tonight. Air Force had led for only 18 of the 484 minutes in the first eight games this season, until sophomore Brendan Gibbons put the Falcons on the board in the first period. Clayton Cosentino, the nation's leader in faceoff wins, won a draw in the offensive zone and Nick Remissong poked the puck from a pile. Gibbons scored with wrister from the right circle at 9:57. Â
The Falcons took a 2-0 lead, its biggest lead of the season, as Clayton Cosentino scored his fourth of the season. Remissong forced a turnover at the blue line and Gibbons chipped a puck to Cosentino on the back door at 9:18 of the second. After a too many men on the ice penalty on Air Force, CC got on the board with a power-play goal at 13:56 as Klavs Veinbergs scored from Ryan Beck and Drew Montgomery. CC outshot Air Force, 18-3, in the second period.
Colorado College (5-0-0) tied the game 60 seconds into the third period as Stanley Cooley skated around the net and set up Drew Montgomery on the doorstep.
In overtime, after a save by Mbereko, Burkholder collected the puck in his own end. Burkholder went coast-to-coast and scored with a wrister from the right circle at 1:08 of the extra period.
CC outshot Air Force, 33-27, in the game. Guy Blessing made 30 saves for the Falcons, while Kaidan Mbereko had 25 for the Tigers. CC was 1-for-4 on the power play while AF was 0-for-3.
"We did pretty much everything we needed to do to win the game, except score the last goal," head coach Frank Serratore said. "We finally scored the first goal and we played with the lead most of the game. They are a big-time team with a lot of star power. Our goalie was arguably the best player in the game. Their goalie was good too. The last few times in this building, we have been blown out, but I'm proud of the steps we are taking. It will be interesting to see if we can duplicate tonight's effort back home for game two on Saturday."
Air Force and CC conclude the two-game series on Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Cadet Ice Arena.
