PROVIDENCE, R.I – Brown scored two goals in the first period and two more in the third for a 5-2 win over Air Force in a non-conference game Saturday, Nov. 30, at the Meehan Auditorium in Providence, R.I.
Brown (3-3-2) scored just 32 seconds into the game as defenseman Alex Pineau scored with a wrister from the right circle on the rush. Air Force answered two minutes later as freshman Michael Kadlecik drew a penalty, giving the Falcons a power play. Chris Hedden scored his sixth goal of the season, from Nolan Cunningham and Clayton Cosentino, with a one-timer from the right circle. Late in the period, Brown regained the lead. Brown winger Zackary Tonelli skated in on a mini breakaway and the Falcons were called for a penalty. On the delayed penalty, Pineau scored his second of the game with 1:57 left in the opening period for a 2-1 lead.
Air Force (8-9-1) tied the game midway through the second period as Rhode Island native Brendan Gibbons scored with a wrister from the high slot. Freshman defensemen, Ren Morque and Beau Janzig, assisted on the play. For Morque, it was his first career collegiate point. The Bears regained the lead 30 seconds later when Brendan Clark put back a rebound for a 3-2 lead at 8:12 of the second.
Midway through the third period, Brown scored its second power-play goal of the series as Brian Nicholas found Max Scott on the back door for a 4-2 lead at 11:56. With 3:20 left in the game, Air Force pulled its goalie for the extra attacker. Air Force had five shots on goal and two others blocked by defensemen. With 47 seconds left, Scott collected a puck in his own end and found the empty net to make the final score 5-2.
Air Force out-shot Brown, 32-31. Air Force was 1-for-3 on the power play while Brown was 1-for-1. Guy Blessing made 26 saves for the Falcons. Lawton Zacher made 30 for the Bears.
"We gave up a goal on the first shift of the game and we chased the game all day," head coach Frank Serratore said. "We have a lot of young guys and we have some older guys dinged up. I thought we wore down a bit tonight. We put ourselves in a situation that if we won the third period, we could have won the game. But we haven't won a period on this entire road trip. We do need to find a way to score a few more goals, win a period and play with the lead. That can happen. We aren't that far away from that. We have been good at home this season and hopefully we can find a way to get some league points when Niagara comes to town next weekend."
Air Force returns home to host Niagara, Dec. 6-7, at the Cadet Ice Arena.
