U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. Senior Guy Blessing posted his fourth career shutout in leading Air Force to a 2-0 win over Canisius in an Atlantic Hockey America conference game Friday, Nov. 8, at the Cadet Ice Arena.
In a scoreless first period, Air Force outshot Canisius, 9-8. Midway through the second period, Canisius requested a video review and Falcon defenseman Chris Hedden was given a major penalty for spearing and a game misconduct. The Falcon penalty kill, and Blessing, kept the game scoreless. Air Force had 10 clears, two blocked shots and a pair of saves by Blessing. One of those shots came from Griff leading scorer Matteo Giampa on the rush. Giampa's shot from the left circle was kicked away at the last second by the toe of Blessing.
Air Force (5-6-0, 2-1-0 AHA) took the early lead for just the second time season. Brendan Gibbons collected a puck behind the Canisius net. Gibbons set up Clayton Cosentino for a shot at the bottom of the left circle and Nick Remissong put back the rebound on the weak side at 14:27. The goal was the first of the season for Remissong.
With 2:44 left in the third period, the Griffs pulled the goalie for the extra attacker. On the ensuing faceoff, Remissong chipped a puck out of the zone and Cosentino carried the puck into the zone. Staring at the empty net, Cosentino set up his fellow captain, Austin Schwartz, for the empty-netter with 2:33 left. Remissong and Cosentino each had two points on the night.
Air Force outshot Canisius (3-7-0, 3-1-1 AHA), 30-21, in the game. Blessing stopped all 21 shots he faced. Ethan Robertson made 28 saves for the Griffs. Each team was 0-for-2 on the power play.
"Our boys should be very proud of themselves," head coach Frank Serratore said. "That was so inspiring. Canisius has such an old team and we have such a young team. We had 13 freshmen and sophomores in the lineup tonight. They are a dangerous team, but we were dialed in and spirited all night. This was all the boys. The only mistake they made tonight was showing us how good they can be. The best player in the game tonight, by a country mile, was Guy Blessing."
The Falcons and Golden Griffins conclude the two-game league series on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 1:05 pm MT at the Cadet Ice Arena.
