LARAMIE, Wyo. -- Air Force junior – and Wyoming native – Texas Tanner had a stellar return to his home state on Saturday, Dec. 7, as he shattered Academy Records in both throwing events during an impressive performance at the Wyoming Power Meet in Laramie. Tanner's records highlighted a day that saw several freshman make an immediate mark on the program's all-time standings.
Tanner opened the day with a program-best distance of 21.80 meters (71'6¼") in the weight throw – unleashing a throw that added nearly three feet to the record he set last year. In a battle between the top-two finishers at last year's conference meet, Tanner added nearly six feet to the program's Junior Class Record that Jaret Prete set in 2022 and accounted for the fourth-best throw in Mountain West history. The junior, who paced the Falcons to two of the top-three finishes in the weight throw (senior Cooper Stroka, third at 19.17/62'10½"), returned to the throwing ring for another record-setting performance in the shot put. Launching a throw of 19.17 meters (62'10½"), Tanner added more than two feet to the previous program standard he set last year, won the meet by more than three feet, added more than two feet to the Class Record that Grant Hamilton set in 2015, and became the new Service Academy Record Holder.
Headlined by a Class Record in the high jump, several first-year members of the women's team had stellar starts to their Academy careers. Freshman Morgan Glaser recorded a winning clearance of 1.81 meters (5'11¼") to debut at No. 2 on the program's all-time standings and reset a Freshman Class Record that Shelley Spires had held since 2015. Classmate Sarah Reynolds, who finished third in the high jump (1.60m, 5'2¾"), became just the ninth Falcon to surpass the 18-foot barrier in the long jump, as she recorded a distance of 18'4¾" (5.61m) to debut with the sixth-best mark in program history. In addition, fellow freshman Ella Pears and Barrett Boyd entered the Academy's all-time standings during runner-up finishes in their respective events. Pears recorded a mark of 11.27 meters (36'11½") to enter the program standings at No. 15, while Boyd became the 22nd Falcon to join the 12-foot club during the indoor season as she debuted in a tie for 19th in the record book with a 3.70m (12'1½") clearance.
Elsewhere at the Hager-LeBar Indoor Track at War Memorial Fieldhouse, senior Robert Postell led the men to a 1-2-3 finish in the pole vault, while a pair of freshmen had strong debuts meet in multiple events. Postell and freshman Brayden Richards posted matching clearances of 4.74m (15'7") to claim the top-two spots, while fellow newcomer James Vogel placed third with a height of 4.50 meters (15'1"). In addition to his runner-up finish in the pole vault, Richards also finished second in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.62. In the field event equivalent of a "time trial", senior Jalan Rivers opened his season with a 2.05m (6'8½") clearance in the high jump.
