DENVER – Air Force dropped a close game at No. 7 Denver, 11-9, Saturday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. The Falcons, now 0-2 this season, showed promise in their effort in taking a first half lead over the high-powered Denver team. The Pios improve to 2-0.
The Falcon offense was led by sophomore goals leader Caelan Driggs who notched his first career hat trick on five shots on goal. Driggs has four goals this season. Six other Falcons tallied goals in Josh Yago, Turner Ashby, Aidan Tolen, Luke Vrsansky, Jake Knapp and Chris Bardak.
Air Force out shot Denver, 33-31. In addition to six shots from Driggs, the Falcons showed the breadth of the shooters as Yago and Tolen put up five shots each, while Ashby and Vrsansky took four attempts apiece.
Jake Knapp had a fair game at the center dot, winning 6-18 attempts. Knapp collected three ground balls in the game while senior captain Chris Bardak picked up a team-high four ground balls.
The Falcon defense was a handful for the Pioneers as Air Force caused 18 of Denver's 28 turnovers. Senior co-team James Chastain led the squad with three caused turnovers while Driggs, Matt Rosato, Daniel Enoch, Cody Gross, and Charlie Pyfer notched two CTOs apiece. In goal, Quinn Richards made 10 saves.
Denver had five goal-scorers, two of which with three-goal performances in Noah Manning and Mic Kelly. JJ Sillstrop and Richie Connel tacked on two apiece while Lucas Klokiw had one.
Next up, Air Force welcomes Ohio State to the Academy for a noon meeting on February 17. The Falcons are aiming to make good on last season's 15-7 loss to the Buckeyes in Columbus. The meeting will mark Ohio State's first trip to USAFA since 2013.
