USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force men's tennis rallied to a 4-3 win over Nevada (4-10, 0-1 MW) in both teams' Mountain West-opener Thursday afternoon at the USAFA Outdoor Tennis Courts. The Falcons (6-8, 1-0 MW) rallied back from a 3-0 deficit by winning four consecutive singles matches to pull out the win.
After falling behind by dropping the doubles point and the first two singles matches, the Falcons mounted their furious rally.
Down 3-0, senior Nick Vroman started the comeback with a win at No. 6 over Greg Valente in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. Junior Arjun Kersten then won at No. 2 over Loris Zisswiller 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 to make it 3-2 Wolf Pack.
Sophomore AJ Moore then tied the match up with a win at No. 3 over Youssef Kadiri in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
Freshman Alec Fritzinger came through in the final singles match, rallying back after dropping the first set at No. 4. Fritzinger rallied to defeat Edgar Destouet 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 and was mobbed by teammates after clinching the win.
Head coach Evan Urbina recapping the win:
"Our first conference match of the year was not without drama! Down 0-3, our team showed mental toughness and resilience to keep fighting. Arjun played his best match of the season with some aggressive tennis. AJ closed out his match well, especially after losing serve. He continues to play well under pressure. Nick got back on the court after battling injuries with a solid performance. What can I say about Alec? He handled the pressure of a 3-3 match with some amazing shots and attacked the net. He's been working hard so I'm very proud to see it pay off. We now turn our attention to Utah State on Saturday. Go Falcons!"
Air Force returns to action Saturday, March 30, hosting #67 Utah State. The match is slated for a 12 pm MT start.
