
Falcons travel to Cowboy Classic, April 1-2

THIS WEEK: Air Force will compete in the Cowboy Classic, hosted by the University of Wyoming, Monday-Tuesday, April 1-2, in Maricopa, Ariz. The tournament will be played at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes, a par-72 course that will play at 7,546 yards. Live scoring will be available on www.Golfstat.com.
THE FORMAT: Teams will play 36 holes in a shotgun start on the first day starting at 7:30 am MT. The final 18 holes will be Tuesday with a shotgun start at 7:30 am MT. Five golfers will play with the low four individual scores determining the team scores for each round.
THE FIELD: Along with Air Force and the host school, Wyoming, the field includes UTEP, USC, Utah Valley, Grand Canyon, Southern Utah, Utah State, UNLV (49), Kansas (61), Northern Colorado, Weber State, St. Mary's, Iowa State, UC Davis, Long Beach State (48), UC Irvine, Kennesaw State, UT Arlington, Wichita Stare, Hawaii, Wyoming, Cal State Fullerton (68) and Cal State Northridge.
THE LINEUP: The Falcon lineup will be: 1- Alvaro Fonseca; 2- Christopher Park; 3-Carson Baker; 4- Eli Huntington; 5-Cameron Kahle.
LAST TIME AT COWBOY CLASSIC: Air Force last competed in the Cowboy Classic in Arizona in 2021, placing 23rd with a 917. Isaac Layne was the top Falcon, shotting a 220 (+4). The tournament was played in Chandler, as opposed to this season's tournament in Maricopa. The only current Falcon to compete in 2021 was Aaron Kuznik who shot a 240.
LAST TIME OUT: Alvaro Fonseca led the Air Force golf team on the final day of the UC San Diego Invitational, March 26, at Torrey Pines North Course in La Jolla, Calif. Fonseca shot 73 (+1) in the final round and led the Falcons over the 54-hole tournament with a 227 (+11). Baker finished the tournament at 230, followed by Huntington (233), Kahle and Morrell (235). Three Falcons competed as individuals. Junior Christopher Park shot a season-best, and tied his career-best, with a 69 in the final round. Park shot a 223 for the tournament. Senior Aaron Kuznik shot a 234 and Eric Liveringhouse shot a 241. North Dakota State won the tournament with an 857 while Idaho was second (866) and Oklahoma Christian was third (868). Air Force shot its best round on the final day with a 301 and finished the tournament in 17th place at 919.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Among players who have played more than nine of the 18 rounds, freshman Eli Huntington leads the team with a 74.11 season stroke average. Sophomore Alvaro Fonseca is second (74.39), followed by junior Cameron Kahle (74.94) and freshman Carson Baker (76.33). The team's 283 on the final day of the Loyola Intercollegiate is the best of the season. The three-round score of 861 at the same tournament is also the best. Cameron Kahle as the best round by a Falcon this season with a 67 in the second round at Loyola. Eli Huntington shot a career-best 68 in the third round of the same tournament.
ON THE HORIZON: Following the Cowboy Classic, the Falcons will travel to Davis, Calif., for the El Macero Classic, April 12-14. The season concludes with the Mountain West Championships, April 26-28, in Tucson, Ariz.
