SAN MARCOS, Texas -- Air Force sophomore Texas Tanner rewrote his own Academy Record in the hammer throw and produced the fifth-best shot put distance in program history on Saturday (March 30), as the track and field team wrapped up an impressive spring break trip with meets in Texas (Bobcat Invitational, Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays) and California (Stanford Invitational).
Tanner, who first broke the Academy's hammer throw record last weekend, added six inches to that distance this morning, when he unleashed a 66.99-meter throw (219'9") to finish fourth at the Bobcat Invitational. After posting that record-setting mark on his final attempt of the 25-thrower "A" section in San Marcos, Tanner headed to Austin for the Top section of the shot put at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. The only Falcon to compete at Mike A Myers Stadium on Saturday, Tanner recorded a personal-best throw of 17.60 meters (57'9") on his opening attempt. A personal outdoor improvement of more than a foot, Tanner claimed a top-10 finish and moved into No. 5 on the Academy's all-time standings.
Back at the Bobcat Invitational, freshman James Warmbrod IV clocked a 400-meter time of 47.46 to finish 13th out of 58 runners and debut at No. 19 on the Academy's all-time standings, while Javin Bostic broke the program's eight-year-old Junior Class Record in the 100-meter dash – recording a season-best time of 10.39 to finish sixth out of 60 runners and take 0.04 off Zach Johnson's mark from 2016. The men also nabbed a top-10 finish from senior Philip Hundl, who clocked a wind-aided 14.05 to finish sixth out of 58 athletes in the 110-meter hurdles.
On the women's side, freshman Kori Leverenz debuted at No. 10 on the Academy's all-time standings in the 400-meter dash, following an outdoor debut of 56.18. Leverenz was one of two Falcons to compete in that race, as junior Taylor Rioux posted an outdoor-opening time of 55.46 to earn a top-20 placement (17th) in the 59-runner event. Leverenz and Rioux also teamed up with freshman Brooke Coleman and senior Katie Thompson on the 4x100-meter relay that combined for a 46.86 finish (11th). Racing together for the third time in as many meets this season, the quartet – which set the Academy Record of 46.62 last weekend – have now accounted for the three-fastest relay times in Air Force history.
STANFORD INVITATIONAL
Senior Alex Patton, the only Falcon to compete in California on Saturday, clocked a season-opening time of 1:52.03 to finish seventh in his section of the 800-meter run at the Stanford Invitational.
After a busy weekend competing at four meets in two states, the Falcons regroup closer to home next week, when they head to Boulder for the Colorado Invitational April 5-6 at Potts field.
