
No. 11 Air Force Comes Up Short Against No. 3 Stanford

USAF ACADEMY – Air Force brought the intensity and scored an impressive 396.450 in Cadet West Gym, Saturday afternoon, at the Air Force Academy. Despite the tremendous effort, the Falcons scored behind No. 3 Stanford who also put up a season-best performance (416.350).
Air Force, who scored just a point below the current season best, notched season-high scores in the still rings, vault, and horizontal bar.
The Falcons had their best showing on the vault as four Falcons scored over 14.000. Oliver Zavel led the way with a career-best 14.450, followed by Erich Upton (14.550) and Bryan Woffinden (14.350) who tallied season-best marks. Garret Braunton and Jake Sampier rounded out the performance with a 14.000 and 13.450, respectively.
Air Force posted a season-high 66.000 on the rings, led by Dennis Irimiea and Garrett Braunton's 13.700 each. The score marked a season best for both gymnasts. Jacob Bechetti also had a season-best mark in the event with a 13.250.
On the H-bar, AF put up a season-best 63.450. Upton led the squad with a 13.150, followed by Charlies Miles (12.800), Zavel (12.700), Eric Popescu (12.650), and Braunton (12.150). Upton's score was a season best.
For the second-straight week, Sam Brown and Jack Matlock put up exemplary work on the pommel, recording 14.050 and 14.000, respectively. Matlock's score was a personal season best.
Sampier led AF on the floor exercise (65.750) with a 13.700, followed up by Sampier (13.700) and Braunton (13.550). On the P-bar (64.950), it was Zavel who led the charge with a 13.800, followed up by Upton (13.500) and Gopaul (13.300).
Braunton was the lone gymnast to register an all-around score (77.350).
Next up, Air Force will host Simpson College on Saturday, March 16, at Cadet West Gym. Action is slated for 2 p.m. MT. Prior to the meet, the Falcons will celebrate Senior Day for Jacob Bechetti, Cole Landes, Jake Sampier, and Oliver Zavel.
