
Air Force Downs Detroit Mercy, 14-3

DETROIT – Air Force rolled its momentum into Saturday with a commanding 14-3 win over Detroit Mercy in ASUN Conference action at Titan Field. The Falcons, now on a six-game ASUN win streak, improved to 7-4 with the win.
Senior midfielder and co-team captain Aidan Tolen posted a season best five goals on five shots, upping his season goal tally to 14. In his second career start in goal, Jake Marek played lights out to earn his second win in as many tries this season. Marek made a career-best 11 saves with just one goal allowed in 45 minutes of action.
Tolen wrangled in the hat trick in the first quarter, scoring three unassisted goals in addition to Turner Ashby's strike to give the Falcons a 4-0 lead heading into the second quarter. Ashby notched his second goal of the game, 18th of the season, four minutes into the second quarter. Ashby, an Inside Lacrosse Top-25 Impact Freshman, has scored a goal in 10 games this season.
Alexander Stepney, Ryan Stadelmaier, and Caelan Driggs notched a goal each to close the first half with an 8-1 scoring advantage for Air Force. Driggs, the Falcons' leading goal scorer (27), put up three goals on the day for his fourth hat trick this season. Junior attacker Josh Yago assisted Stepney and Dirggs in their second-quarter goals, upping his total assist count to 22. Yago leads the ASUN in assists per game (2.00). Cole Cunningham was credited with the assist to Stadelmaier.
The third quarter was all Air Force as the Falcons outscored the Titans 6-0 in the quarter. Jake Knapp assisted Yago in his strike just seven seconds out of the halftime break. Luke Vrsansky followed up with an unassisted goal to give AF a 10-1 lead. Driggs banged in two-straight goals with the help of Kyle Griffith and Ashby. Tolen followed up with a pair of goals of his own, assisted by Vrsansky and Ashby.
Detroit Mercy added two goals to their tally in the fourth quarter while Air Force went scoreless.
Jake Knapp had a winning day at the center X with seven wins in 10 attempts. Teammate Braden Gaab won four balls in five attempts and Daniel Haimes won three of his five attempts. As a face off unit, the Falcons won 14-20.
Defensively, Air Force caused 7 of the Titans' 15 turnovers. Ashby was credited with two CTOs from the offensive side of the field.
Next up, the Falcons welcome Mercer to the Academy for a midweek matchup, Wednesday (April 17). Action is slated for noon MT at Falcon Stadium. Air Force is on a two-game winning streak against the Bears but looks to redeem its last meeting at Falcon Stadium where Mercer outscored AF, 15-13.
