Air Force Grinds Out 4-3 Win Over San Diego State To Clinch Series

Air Force baseball (23-25, 15-11 MW) held off San Diego State (14-34, 8-17 MW) for a 4-3 win Saturday night in Mountain West action at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The win extended Air Force's win streak to three games and its win streak over the Aztecs increased to seven games.

A stellar pitching performance from the duo of Dylan Rodgers and Doyle Gehring and a big sixth inning led to the win.

Rodgers (5-5) picked up the win for the Falcons with another strong outing against the Aztecs. The junior right-hander struck out five over six innings, allowing two runs, one earned, for the win. It was his second win over the Aztecs this season.

Gehring allowed one hit over the final three winnings to pick up his team-leading eighth save of the season.

San Diego State put up a run in the first inning to take an early lead.

The Falcons quickly responded with a run in the bottom of the second to tie the game up. Zapp executed a perfect RBI bunt to score Peters from third for the run.

Air Force went ahead 2-1 with a run manufactured in the third. Chase Spencer led the inning off with a triple off the fence in left center. Sam Kulasingam then scored Spencer with a sac-fly RBI down the left field line to put the Falcons ahead.

The Aztecs tied the game up at 2-2 with a run in the fifth.

Kulasingam started the sixth with a single and senior Jay Thomason followed with a triple to right-center to bring in Kulasingam. Thomas went on to score the second run on a passed ball to put the Falcons ahead 4-2.

San Diego State scored a run in the eighth to pull to within one, but Gehring tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the game for the Falcons.

Air Force had six hits on the day with Thomason collecting two hits. The two triples by the Falcons were its lone extra base hits. San Diego State had eight hits on the day, with just one extra base hit.

Rodgers out-dueled starter Omar Serrano (4-6), who took the loss for SDSU with six innings pitched.

The teams conclude the series on Sunday, May 12 with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 pm MT.
