INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Air Force track and field team earned 18 bids into the West Preliminary of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the national office announced today (May 16), with the release of its official NCAA qualifiers. The Falcons, who qualified athletes in 15 different events, will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., next week (May 22-25) for the opening round of the national meet.
Based on their ranking as one of the West's top 48 accepted athletes in each event, a total of 12 men and three women will compete at John McDonnell Stadium on the University of Arkansas campus.
The men qualified multiple athletes in two events, including the hammer throw (sophomore Texas Tanner, senior Gerrit Tamminga, junior Cooper Stroka) and 400-meter hurdles (junior Cameron Breier, junior Darek Hackett), with Tanner and Hackett holding Top 10 regional rankings at seventh and eighth, respectively. Tanner also qualified to the West Prelim in the shot put and discus throw, while junior Javin Bostic will represent Air Force in both the opening rounds of both the 100-meter and 200-meter sprints.
Junior Jalan Rivers (high jump), senior Brandon Lindner (long jump) and junior Joe Nizich (javelin throw) also qualified to Fayetteville from the field events, while Air Force advanced athletes on both the men's and women's side of the 10,000-meter run (sophomore India Jones, senior Luke Combs – regional top 20) and 3000-meter steeplechase (junior Jason Renze, senior Rachel Crytser). Senior Sean Maison and junior Halle Hamilton rounded out the Falcons' list of Prelim qualifiers, as Mason advanced in the 1500-meter run and Hamilton qualified in the 5000-meter run.
