SAINT-LAMBERT, Quebec, Canada - Air Force men's basketball defeated to McGill University, 54-52, Saturday afternoon at Champlain Gym on the campus of Champlain College. Senior guard Ethan Taylor led the Falcons with 22 points and seven rebounds.
Air Force started the game strong, leading 24-10 after the first quarter. A 14-0 run during the quarter sparked the fast start. McGill came back in the second quarter to get to within eight at 34-26 out-scoring the Falcons 16-10.
McGill pulled to within one point in the third quarter, but Air Force fought back and got the lead back up to 11 with 8:41 left to play. Despite not scoring in the last 4:47 of the game, the Falcons were able to hold off McGill with just enough defensive stops and key rebounds.
Taylor hit five three's for the Falcons, adding three assist and two steals. Senior Beau Becker added 11 points, four rebounds and three three's. Senior Jeffrey Mills had six assists and no turnovers. Sophomore Wesley Celichowski led the reserves with five points and five rebounds.
Joe Scott recapping the McGill game:
"This game was another good experience for us. We played really well. I thought we played really well offensively and defensively. For this group, we're on this trip for the reason of we have to learn how to eliminate lapses in competing. We have to eliminate that quarter, or that five-six minute spell where we let a team back in the game. The second quarter today was like the second quarter we had the other night. But we were more competitive and aggressive today. We should have won by a lot more than two points, but some things keep creeping up in our competitiveness where we allow teams to come back. We are looking to gain more maturity, more competitiveness and more aggressiveness to close out a game. Its been a good experience for our guys. Obviously having two more points than the opponent is great, but that's not what this trip is about. Its really about growing up and maturing and coming together as a team and having a standard of competition every single second out on that court."
Air Force wraps up its Canada tour tomorrow, its fifth game of the trip, against Laval University on Sunday, Aug. 4 at 2 pm ET. The game will be played at Desjardins Amphitheatre in Quebec City, Quebec
