Air Force men's basketball is wrapping up its Canada tour, having played five games in a seven day span from July 29-Aug. 4. Jeffrey Mills, a senior guard, recounts the final days of the trip.
Friday
Friday was an off day for our Canada trip. We started the day off with a lift in the hotel gym followed by breakfast. After that we did a jet boat ride on the St. Lawrence River. During the boat ride, we visited the rapids on the river and had the boat jump through the waves and we all got soaked. It was a bit scary for me but the team and I had a great time. Following the boat ride, we got lunch at a famous deli in Montreal called Rueben's deli. The deli specialized in smoked meats and the food was amazing. After that we visited Old Montreal, which was Montreal with a more European feel to it. While in Old Montreal, we walked around the city and got some good food at the local stands throughout the city. Due to us having an early game the next day, that was all that we did as a team for the day. We went back to the hotel and got our body and minds ready for the game on Saturday.
Saturday
Saturday was gameday against McGill University, which is deemed as the Harvard of Canadian Universities. We started the day off with pregame meal and then we packed our bags and headed to the game. The game was a much better showing than our previous game on Thursday. We came out with a lot of energy and got after them early. There were some hiccups during the game, like us struggling to score and letting McGill come back in the fourth quarter. But playing four years of college basketball has taught me that the good teams find a way to win, and that exactly what we did. Following the game we showered and hit the road for our final stop of the Canadian trip at Quebec City. Once we arrived at Quebec City, we walked around the town and went sightseeing. I would describe Quebec City as a city in Europe. The buildings are full of hidden details and there are a bunch of restaurants and bars on the side of the streets. After sightseeing we had a team dinner at the steakhouse L'entrecôte. Following the dinner we headed back to the hotel to get rest for our final game on our Canadian trip at 1400 the following day.
Sunday
Sunday was our final game against Laval University who won the Canadian National Championship last year. We started the day with pregame meal and then headed to the game. Before the game Coach Scott preached competitiveness, which he has been doing the whole trip. He made it a point to my teammates and I not to have our competitiveness fall off for the final game, which we have done in the past. We came out the game strong and played how we needed to in order to get the win. Following the win, we had the rest of the day do what we wanted. I explored Quebec City with my teammates and had a good time!
