
Falcons experience successful day one at Bedford Cup

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Air Force Women's Tennis, on the opening day of their 2024-25 season, earned multiple wins across its roster at the ITA Bedford Cup in the Mountains.
In the alpha draw, Arianna Van Houweling opened her year defeating New Mexico's Sarah Alice O'Connor, 6-2, 6-1, then fell to Denver's Louise Wikander, 6-2, 6-4 to split her day one results.
On the Bravo bracket, senior Alexis Odom advanced into the semifinals behind a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Montana State's Kavya Khirwar and 6-1, 6-4 victory over longtime UNM opponent Bente Vandeputte.
Sophomore Nadia Kojonroj, despite falling into the east bracket after a round one loss, advanced with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Davidson senior Kavya Patel.
In the Charlie draw, freshman Sofia Mavor went 2-0 in her collegiate debut and was the first singles player of the field to get off the court on Friday. Mavor downed Utah State's Magdalena Nunez Pureco, 7-5, 6-4, followed by a dominant 6-1, 6-1 second-round win over Colorado State's Mariya Debreva.
In the Delta bracket, sophomore Carissa Holguin split her pair of contests, starting on a three-set, 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 win against Montana State senior Mia Ljubas.
Colorado Springs newcomer Maya Michalski went 2-0 on the day, scoring a 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 win over UNM freshman Maria Matsoukatidi, then earned a 7-6, 6-2 straight-set win over Davidson sophomore Alex Rodehorst.
Capping off Falcon successes in the Delta draw was a 2-0 day for sophomore Giovanna Sanchirico, who defeated Idaho State's Olivia Mikkelson (6-3, 7-5) and Davidson's Ellie Hammond (6-3, 6-4).
In the Echo round-robin, sophomore Joselyn Limbago opened her day with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Utah State's Natalie Paterova.
In doubles, sophomore Nadia Kojonroj and freshman Shivaani Selvan opened their bid on an 8-5 victory over Wyoming's Ruby Young/Elena Trencheva.

"I thought everyone played really well and competed hard. For our first tournament of the season, I was impressed with how we competed and supported one another. I'm looking forward to day 2 of the Bedford Cup."
