Pair of Falcons set for Bedford Cup title bids

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Air Force Women's Tennis continued its successful run in its own ITA Bedford Cup in the Mountains on Saturday afternoon, earning six wins across the Falcon roster, with two earning a shot at Bedford Cup Champion status on Sunday morning.

Freshman Sofia Mavor improved to 3-0 and advanced into the Charlie bracket championship, defeating South Dakota sophomore Sorcha Caves. She will face Colorado State's Logan Voeks for a chance at a Charlie title. Voeks closed her freshman season with the Rams a Mountain West All-Tournament selection.

In the Delta draw, sophomore Giovanna Sanchirico came back in her second set to defeat UNM's Sofia Taborga, 6-1, 7-5 to advance into the title match against Idaho State's Millie Day, putting a 3-0 record on the line Sunday morning.

Senior Alexis Odom dropped a 7-6 (5), 6-1 decision on Saturday in the Bravo East bracket to South Dakota's Grace Chadick. Still 2-1 on the weekend, Odom will compete in the third-place playoff on Sunday against New Mexico senior Maria Sodre.

Fellow newcomer Shivaani Selvan, competing in the west side of the Charlie bracket, improved to 2-1 with a 6-2, 6-4 victory against Wyoming's Adel Ismagulova for a shot at Utah State's Magdalena Nunez Pureco in the west final.

Doubles pair Mavor/Arianna Van Houweling, after dropping to the west doubles bracket on Friday evening, went 2-0 on Saturday behind 8-1 and 8-5 wins. The duo is set to face off against Wyoming duo Eugenia Cenios/Serina Abriola in the west finals of the Red draw.

The final day of the Bedford Cup in the Mountains will begin at 9:45 a.m. on Sunday at the Air Force Academy Tennis Courts.
